Serious again: our healthcare system is f****d. Two back surgeries (one paid for out of pocket without insurance) destroyed me financially. Up till that point, I was doing very very well. The problem is, they are implementing the most ludicrous solutions that they possibly can. The sheer absurdity of what has been shoved down our throats goes a long way to validate Davy's conspiracy theories. I'm all for a good fix. The problem is, that's not at all what is happening.

Part of the problem with the US system is that it should not be 1/6 of the economy.

We have too many over-lapping parts where someone is taking profits off of each transaction. You end up paying a huge amount in infrastructure and insurance overhead. That's capitalism in healthcare.

In addition to individual health insurance we have;
-Auto medical for the policy holder.
-Auto medical for the uninsured.
-Worker's comp for employees.
-Medical liability for businesses.
-Medical liability for property.
-Medi care.
-VA.
-numerous state programs for old, young, poor, aliens,
-???

This creates different programs which all need to be managed by someone who " needs" to be paid executive salaries and if it is a publically traded company the stock holders have to profit. The systems have vast infrastructure just to determine whether or not someone is eligible. In many cases, the first thing that happens when a claim is made is that the insurer trys to find a reason why benefits can be denied. It is not uncommon for someone who believed they were covered to be denied. Many individuals are covered by programs available from their employers and therefore lose it when they are layed off or are sick for an extended period. Some insurance companies consider it a pre-existing condition to be denied coverage or if you are not currently covered! The list of pre-existing conditions for which coverage could be denied were extensive. (3 of my family of 5 go in these categories.)

Obama wanted to change this. He may have some other motives too but when he started this he was first met with an opposition which clearly stated that they would not allow him to succeed. Is it really any surprise that what we got out of it is a mess? Imagine if those who consider themselves "fiscally responsible" were trying to make this work as efficiently as possible instead of trying to prove that it will fail.

What is there to be proud of in this mess? It is embarrassing as a nation.

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents (pence) in to this health care discussion.

I only post this because, I have experience. I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, and moved to Wales almost 10 years ago. I've had 3 knee operations in the States (one that was paid for by welfare), and I've had two hernia operations done on the NHS (National Health Service)in the UK.

My experience is that under the American system people without money do get help. Things may have changed now, as it was almost 15 years ago that my last knee op was paid by the government. The reason they paid the bill was because after serving 3 years in voluntary/mission work in Canada, and I came from there with less that to my name. After Canada I went to Bible College on a scholarship and was messing about playing football/soccer and blew an ACL.

The point of giving you these details, is that clearly my financial situation was due to my choices. And the government still paid the bill which must have been including rehab. So, how is it that they are so bad in covering the bills for people who are in financial problems, due to factors outside their control? In my thinking, my case, should have been one that was refused, instead of someone without a job (edit: meaning,someone made unemployed), etc.

So, either things have changed for the worse. Or, the media (and I have say the UK media is good at this) has cherry picked anecdotes to suit their story. I see loads of people saying how unfair the US system is, I'm not saying that the stories we hear, of people not getting help are lies, but its far from my experience.

Now, my experience with the NHS, hasn't been horrendous, but the service is not a patch on the service in the States. My hernia op was obviously not life threatening, but I waited 13 months to get it done, and it wasn't done right and they had to go back in and redo it. Stuff happens, but my overall experience is that the staff attitudes are worse in the NHS. There are more people (not all them, mind) who treat you like: you are just a job to do, instead of a person. Things like explanations of what they are doing and why, are sometimes non-existent. You get the idea that they just want to push people through the system.

And herein lies the problem: money. I think the poor patient relationships in the NHS are probably due to the fact that everything is squeezed to the guts to make ends meet. And, likewise the reason that health insurance in the States can't cover people like they did 20 years ago is: money.

I personally think the US system is better, before costs went through the roof. For people in the UK who may not know this: years ago your insurance was always covered 100% by your employer, with the exception of a small deductible or access payment that was only paid when needed. So, health care wasn't a hand out, you had to work to get it, and then therefore the amount of people who needed a hangout, was smaller and government was more able to cover it.

So, what needs to happen on both sides is to reel in the costs. They are truly beyond belief. I think this is due to two reasons: increased tech; that does things we never dreamed of years ago, and perhaps the biggest problem: litigation. So, in a nutshell the real cause is our perceived right to have every thing perfect for my health and my life (edit: coupled together with the wealth we have, which enables us to try and make this happen). Compare this against the disparity of health care provision in the third world and now we have an ethical question as well...

Speaking of topics about which people can't seem to resist holding forth ad nausea, the topic of politics, among others, is even less interesting to me, if possible, than the topic of football (about the latter of which, I freely admit I could not hope to hold an intelligent, or even a pretentiously intelligent, conversation, much less an intelligible one, if I tried).

So kudos to football.

One problem, I have found, is that the espousers of such opinions often inflict (wittingly or not) way too much EGO ("Eyes Glaze Over") upon their audience.

Therefore I must confess that, as an act of self-preservation, I have not read every post on this thread. I firmly believe that one should not inflict upon oneself what one could not imagine forcing another living creature to endure.

But I have read a few posts. Some idiotic, a few intelligent, a few genuinely funny, and more than a few unintentionally hilarious posts. Often (but not always) the intelligent posts are also genuinely funny; and the idiotic posts are also unintentionally hilarious, and/or vice versa.

I cannot say if what I have read constitutes a representative sampling of the content of the entire thread. Of this I am glad. Some conclusions, like Muslim prayer shawls curtains, are better left undrawn...

I don't know if you caught my original post that brought up the UK and Aus. It basically said every time we discuss our (US) problems, half of the input comes from guys from the UK and Aus. Rather than tellin ya'll to mind your own business (cause over time I've learned to like and even respect many of your opinions), I think it would only be fair if we (from the US) had a few knock down drag out political fights over whatever is going on in your countries. The problem is, most of us are ignorant of your current problems that you are facing, and therefore we don't yet have an opinion.
