First post so bear with me. I have searched the forums and have found some good guides, but being new to dogfight ive noticed in games the veteran players have an unwritten set of rules that they play by. I have been called out on things I didn't even know were frowned upon early on.

Its very discouraging to newer players to just be called out in the middle of a game and be called a cheater or a weak pilot for just trying to survive or win without even knowing. So to help the newbies like myself I was hoping some of you more experienced players would cover some of the things ive seen and maybe some I haven't.

Dropping, Sneaking, Spawn Killing Etc.....

I'm very sorry for the conduct of many players of Dogfight. For some reason people are always trying to make rules for this game which has very few.

In fact, the only official "rules" are listed on a thread titled:

*Read before posting* Forum Rules/Etiquette

Under the section "Dogfight (in game) and Dogfight Forum Rules" eighteen rules are listed. The only one pertaining to in-game play is:

17. (In game only) Do not team kill, destroy our own bases or anything else that would be deemed "gameplay ruining"

The other "rules" are about various legal issues and various forms and types of communication. For example:

12. Do not bash other players or squadrons either in forum or in game.

13. Absolutely no flaming/trolling or heavy swearing. You will be banned for a certain amount of time which is at the discretion of the Admin/Mod.

14. Help new players.

16. We respect other people's thoughts, opinions and beliefs.

18. Remember: The use of Dogfight and forum is a privilege, not a right. The Dogfight staff reserves the right to revoke access and remove content without notice. This includes being muted or banned in game.

Being in a tank by the enemy base and killing planes, is the only real bannable offence. Many players will camp, and even spawnkill. It is frowned upon, but I don't think it will get you banned. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me, or post here.

Its ok, when these thing are explained correctly it can help. Its just difficult not knowing for a lot of new players. I can understand especially with the morafs and vets out there that if everyone dropped the game would turn into a dogfight and no one would ever win. It just can get weird when the two pilots are on two completely different skill levels. Some guys are nice enough to explain these things others aren't. I was just hoping to help other newer players avoid the hassle.

Yes, it can be very intimidating at first, take it from one who knows. Just relax, play your game and get aquainted. There are many different types of people around here, and you will learn quickly if you choose. Just know, this is a fantastick community with many more good eggs than bad, that are more than willing to help at any time. PM me anytme if you like, and good luck. And by all means, ENJOY!!

Yea, McFate's got it right there. I'm not sure when some of these people decided that we all needed to be policed and read the riot act for playing the game the way it was created. The ceiling is roughly 4000ft and the map goes way over to the left and way over to the right. Feel free to use all of it. Zuperman (the creator of the game) has made it very clear that there are only a few absolutes:do not spawn kill in a tank and do not use offensive language. He has even rewritten the code to help prevent these things though you will still see the bad apples once in a while. The rest is up to you and a bit in the gray area. For instance, if you find yourself in a lopsided game on the side of many, it's bad form going high or wide. Everyone re-read this part:bad form, not against the rules. You probably won't make any friends doing it and next time you might be on the short end of the stick and lots of us have good memories. It doesn't mean you need to just fly right up the middle either. I like to go a little off center, enough to make them work at it but not so far that I'm off the radar. That's just me though. As far as dropping, do it if you want to. Do it if you need to. If you're new to the game and maybe don't have the top tier planes, it might be the only way you have any chance to survive against the top shooters. Chances are it won't help you against some of the people in game but it might and you may learn some tricks to better your chances instead of just being a floating paper weight and easy target. Learn to turn fight, learn to dive bomb, learn to cork screw in on target but most of all have fun and use common sense. Lastly, try and grow a little bit of a thick skin because no matter how "honorable" you play this silly little game (let's not forget, that's all it really is folks) people are going to complain so shrug it off and tell em "oh I'm sorry, I thought we were playing an aviation combat game". Good luck!

Links to discussions worth checking out:
note: I am not recommending these threads only for the content of their original posts, but rather as community discussions on these topics so the reader can check out a variety of opinions held by many different players.

On dropping in bombing games:

did you forget something?

Complaining about droppers? STFU!

On sneaking:

the punishment sneakers deserve?

1000 is not sneaking

On Spawnkilling:

SPAWN KILLING: The Great Debate

spawnkilling?

On creation of "rules" or on defining of "ettiquette":
Note: These threads were forum community suggestions/creations not Echoboom's official stance.

"official dogfight community laws"

Provide content for the forum's "Rules" Tab

Lol,

Charlie8 was just saying that there are lots of ways to fly so don't let the up-the-middle guys tell you what to do. Then he mentioned some names of people you can PM if you need any help.

Thanks Charlie8 !

I believe I am Winplas?

I think it translates to:

Well said McFate. I can tell you that I just try as best I can to win without violating serious rules are administered and that made it here in this thread already mentioned. I try to have fun, go slowly improving, and I am especially not to be swayed by those pilots who just want to go for the 'friendly' center, where you will not have any chance of getting out alive. Greetings and good luck! I'll be here for you and that can help you. I will give you some names so this not all me. hehe talk to (McFate, Hulk, Scombro, Rodama, winplas(Whiplash), ziza, Sacasa, sangenstres, any of which I quote here could help you and are also many like them, great pilots and great people. Greetings.

Thanks for the replies everyone. When I first started playing I would drop or sneak just so I have a chance against the much better planes...and players out there, but as I get better planes and skill ive noticed that tactics change game to game and it is ALL situational. Have fun without taking the fun out of the game for others if possible. I would hate if a moraf came into a game and dropped just to pad stats just as much as someone below me would if I did it, but there are times you need to defend and play the game.

Thanks McFate for taking the time to post all of those links
Lots of good info and people on this forum and I look forward to getting to know you all better

For newbies, drop your bombs, climb to about 1000 meters, fly over top of your target, come in from behind them an shoot away. Do this several hundred times until you get a new plane.
