I want to be more of a nozzle man because here we go in to look for the victims. I may be a probie (fire term) but I'm absolutely proud of what I do! Many people asked me hour much I makedoing this. I only make 10.06 an hour per call.. (understand that?) I know its not much because our average fire is about 2 or 3 hours. But I don't do it for the money, I do this because it brings me joy to know I'm helping others or I saved another persons life. I don't know about you coop but when I look back on my life in 20 or 30 years. I know that there's nothing I wouldn't regret or redo if it ment I made a difference.
Very cool brother..Where ya from? And NO YOU DONT WANT TO BE A NOZZELMAN...LOL I started my career as a nozzelman right out of the academy was sent to Engine 4 as a jumper(meaning I wasnt really part of any house just went where I was needed)I played with water for 10 yrs.with Engine 4 thought it was the cats ass until a job opened up on Ladder 1 tillerman I bid on the job and got it.Never looked back there is nothing more rewarding than bringing someone out and returning them to there loved ones.I spent a few years steering the back of that truck and going to every damn roof in the city cutting holes.I then moved over to the seat behind the driver of Ladder 1 Primary search was there until I was promoted last yr to Lt. of Ladder 1 I have come full circle now.In 2006 I was firefighter of the year for the city of Mt.Penn I had managed to work my way into a 3 story row home and bring a 265lb. unconscious male out a second story window to saftey.
I was awarded the Medal of Valor buy the Chief the best part of that story was I was not there to recive it.You see we dont do medals and awards we are not heros, its funny I was at home and I got a phone call from one of my brother firemen and he said congats,I said for what he said you recived the Medal of Valor and firefighter of the yr. I said bullshit then the Chief got on the phone and said ASSHOLE thanks for not being here for your award I just laughed and said thanks Chief BUT ITS MY JOB.To this day I do noy wear it on my uniform.I am proud of you for doing what you do not all men are cut out for this job it takes a special person. There are many highs and as equal if not more lows in the duties of a firefighter, for every life you save there will the ones you cannot.A few years back I was on the fourth floor of an apartment building with my Lt.we had orders to find an elderly lady who was trapped we pushed through the fire and made it to the hallway when we were orderd to get out because the roof was coming down.we could hear her screaming and we did not want to leave because we knew we could get her we did not get her we didnt leave we just didnt make it in time there was no way we were leaving that woman we knew we were going to get suspended but we had to try.thats what its all about.By the way the roof never came down.Just remember what I tell you do it for the love not the glory do it because its your job,NEVER HESITATE AND ALWAYS GO WITH YOUR GUTS. Watch out for your partner. If one goes we all go!!
STAY FROSTY BROTHER AND KEEP FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT.
