I would love some help comming up with some good Medal worthy goals. I'll do my best to come up with designs that look real but still convey what they are for. Perhaps once we have the ideas and ribbons made you can throw a chart Together to show them all and what they are for.

Considering the circumstances, a small announcement:

The New Lunar Republic will be putting its recruiting activities on hold for now, as we are currently reworking a new policy, and to avoid any confusion while doing so. To anybody who would like to join or is in the process, thank you for your patience.

Welcome buddy. You can place the [nlr] tag before your name till you cross the level 20 after that you can change it to [NLR].

It seems Vivek is following the proposal I will revise it (simpler version) as soon as late tonight - maybe sometime tomorrow. Mainly, as I just mentioned, I'm going to attempt to follow D's advice to limit it to recruiting only.

However, if we are still of the same mind that "officers" should have the agency to bring in a recruit on-the-spot, some mention of voting will need to be outlined.

Anything else I should keep in mind? Any other requests/feedback?

Do you strongly feel we should drop this issue/carry forward?


On a different matter: I will add that I am rather "alleviated" by the sudden events of this week. And I hope the reduced number in our squad hasn't take the wind from our sails. My opinion is that we dodged a bullet, as it was becoming particularly obvious that the intention was to essentially take over our squad by quickly filling it with as many members as possible. Someone wanted a blank-check \ full control, and wasn't happy about not getting it.

If anything, the lesson to learn here is to take greater care deciding who we bring in (not less care). I, for one, want more Fates, Disrupts, Viveks, Octavias, and 420s.

I like what we have. It's home. If you are all okay with small I am too. I'm not going anywhere else. Unfortunately I don't have much time for Dogfight right now but I will be around.

I like the sponsorship program. It makes it easier to take in a recruit yet it keeps the growth in check. We still do need a plan to handle random applicants. Communicating with them is the challenge.

NLR Recruiting: How it works
Updated and Effective May 2015

The New Lunar Republic has established its own approach to recruiting in order to continue to find the best squad/pilot matches within the Dogfight community. This approach kept four key issues in mind:

• Giving agency and autonomy to proven and long devoted members
• Finding well suited candidates to meet our values as a squad
• Offering quick and simple NLR membership
• Maintaining an elegantly simple and self-sufficient recruiting system

Quick and easy terms are as follows:

MORAF, Air Marshals, Group Captains, (AKA Officers) can recruit/sponsor any pilot on-the-spot (one pilot at a time) provided the potential recruit meets these simple conditions

• The pilot is preferred (but not required) to be rated at level 10 (Group Captain III) or higher
• Is well-known to the officer/recruiter/sponsor
• Is considered a good fit within the NLR squad
• Is open to all race, religion, nationalities, and gender identification.


Details and not so easy terms are as follows:

Sponsorship:
Once an officer brings in a new recruit, s/he becomes a sponsor to the recruit. It is the sponsor’s job to:

• welcome the recruit by an immediate introduction on the forum,
• show the new recruit the ropes and heavily persuade the recruit to take part in forum discussions where all voices are welcome and heard
• inform the new recruit of his/her ranking within the squad (Lieutenant [nlr])
• inform the new recruit about tools like the NLR website and handy links to forum discussions.
• Provide an emphasis on fair play, supportiveness, Dogfight/NLR ethics, and forum etiquette are a must. There is a reason the top three forum writers are NLRs.

Only when the sponsor’s recruit moves from Lieutenant status to Wing Commander status, can a sponsor take on another new recruit. In other words, only one new recruit [nlr] at a time per officer/sponsor (see below).

[NLR] & [nlr]:
All new recruits come in as Lieutenants (unless Air Marshals make an exception) and must proudly wear the [nlr] (lowercase) tag. Once a recruit hits the level 20 (II Major General), or is voted in to a higher rank (whichever comes first), the recruit can and should upgrade the tag to [NLR] and move to NLR Wing Commander status.

Both sponsor and recruit will be highly congratulated. The sponsor can then begin to search for another new recruit.


What to do if you are currently sponsoring but know of another potential:
Simply ask other squad members to sponsor the potential recruit. If all members with sponsoring privileges are already sponsoring, then it may be time to slow down on the recruiting process.


Rules for Dismissal:
Any new recruit (Lieutenant/ nlr) is subject to quick dismissal by any 1 vote from an Air Marshal. Some reasons an officer may act to dismiss and terminate an NLR membership are (but not limited to):
• Rumors of poor Dogfight game-play ethics and forum etiquette
• Failure to use the [nlr] tag
• Failure to login and/or post to the forum within 60 days
• Does not seem to be a good fit within the squad

Once the dismissal is determined, the sponsor (not necessarily the dismissing officers) must make the dismissal known to the recruit and should apologize for the recruit’s behavior if necessary.

Since recruiting/sponsorship is a privilege, any NLR member can lose recruiting/sponsorship at any time. Air Marshal votes are required to remove this privilege.

The NLR goal is to bring in good, well-suited members. No rush is needed.


However, if we get about one applicant a week, the little entry doesn't much address the issue. Yet, if these near weekly requests rarely show promise, my opinion is to respond with, "We will keep an eye out for and try to get to know you better."

Finn, I think you've put together a brilliant new policy for the NLR.

It's very reminiscent with military tradition. Here in the U.S. Navy, when a 1st Class Petty Officer shows potential for the rank of Chief Petty Officer, they are sponsored by a current Chief. That said sponsoring individual is responsible for the sponsoree's progression and eventual acceptance into the new rank. In the Navy, you're not just getting promoted to Chief, you're joining a new breed, a new family.

If this new policy follows that mindset, I have no doubt it will be successful! Fantastic job, NLR, you continue to make me proud.

Thanks, Luna. But very little of it has to do with my ideas. I stole a bit from everyone during our wonderfully fruitful debate on the subject.

If I had it my way, we'd only take those with a deep and respected history of forum posts. Our response to anyone else would be something like "Write more. Until then, bug off!"

I will admit, however, that I see one or two flaws with my approach
