We initially offered sparrow (nlr) instead of [NLR] because we had no background on him. With recent reports I think we can offer him full [NLR] status.

But, I'm under the opinion that new members should be acknowledged to the community with a fresh, new, public post (Not under the NLR threads)announcing our acceptance of them and vise versa - much like what was done with GreyGhost. I'm a fan of that fanfare and community recognition. Not so much lowercase recognition. My two cents - as always.

I agree about the recognition Finn. In most cases someone in the squad knows the potential recruit. We have had a few who were mostly unknown who we let join but it did not work out. It's a bit of a dilemma. Should we pass on potential recruits because they don't have a lengthy forum history? It can take a while for us to discuss a potential recruit. I like having the lower case option. If someone meets all other criteria, it seems better than "come back later".

Good reputation on forum / good shooting skill should carry equal votes.

But what about those who doesn't have the forum history nor anyone know about him but one of us seen him playing good game.

What would we do if none of us saw a player in action, but we were familiar with the pilot's good forum posts? I imagine the same answer would apply to your question, Vivek.

Does the real issue here have more to do with being uncomfortable telling interested players, "No"?

Are we proposing we accept everyone?

The latter question is an option, I gather. The former question is valid too. In that regard, I'd be happy to write a rejection letter for each concern to be copy and pasted in a PM (I hope we would send rejections in PMs, not public forums) for - inadequate game performance and inadequate forum performance. If that is what is needed, I can PM it to the officers.

If we are accepting everyone, then we have a jerk (me) causing a ruckus were none is needed.

I do want to reiterate that in no way am I arguing that Dear Sparrow is not a good fit. He seems like a fine fellow, and I'm glad he didn't react to the lowercase treatment the same way I would have. Three all caps cheers to you, good man.

May I add my opinion.

On Luna's original post, she said, something along the lines of, We are a squadron of elite flying members. I believe forum input is vital so that people know their part of the squadron and we feel as one. The thing is we want to be a live dangerous squadron. Our restrictions of rank 20 let those awesome Air Commedores and Brigadere Generals into another squadrons grasp before they reach the required rank for our squad. Our squad is also full of many members who never post, I've never seen them fly, and even never heard of them. I believe that the squad needs to be condensed to just the pilots who are active and represent our squadron. If a pilot comes back after inactivity they can opt to rejoin the squadron. I also believe a recruitment system needs to be in place starting pilots being recruited at rank 10 (III Group Captain). When I was at falcon I was the recruitment officer for an extended period of time. I saw the effect that this system had. People were flying a lot to show members their ability to get accepted into the squad, people were sending me messages constantly wanting updates on how their recruitment was going. Members and officers of the squad would assess them in game and report back. After a week or 2 they would have ranked up a few times (maybe rank 15) and then when they were in they were eager to get the banner on and start flying. They also made a squad for falcon recruits that allowed them to be identied easily and already feel like they were halfway there.

This enthusiasm to join made pilots work hard and get to where we wanted them. I believe a system like this would be effective.

Sorry for the long message but I feel like it needs to be explained in detail to show the effectiveness of the system.

Thanks for everyone giving their input! Here's my take on it:

Finn brings up a good point with the whole junior classification system we have going on. The way I see it, the reason any squad would have that sort of process implemented would be either they:

-Are a pretentious and conceited bunch that believe that new players aren't good enough for the full title, or

-Would like to give those who are unknown to us a chance to join the squad, whilst keeping wary of any behavior we may or may not know about.

I can't really tell which one we are, as that's not something for me to judge from the inside. Of course, I'd like to consider it the latter, but we could always drop the whole thing. One thing is for sure, we have standards, on behavior, performance, and activity. Which one we hold higher over the other, and how strictly/tactfully we enforce these standards will decide if we are a group of among the most honorable of DF; or if we are pompous, ostentatious big-shots who hold our noses just a bit too high.

We can become more aggressive in how we decline and purge members. We can make things cut and dry, you are either good enough, or you aren't. And of course, that is a decision that we must all decide and agree on together.

Whatever the outcome, just remember where we all started and came from, and please be considerate on how we carry this out.

Exactly, that was the case I had in my mind. We inducted a member and within 6 hrs he is out. The case is different when the member is active in forum as you can very well judge his behaviour after going through his/her post(s). It doesn't matter he is skilled fighter or not and at which rank. Many times we have inducted below 20 rank players in past also. But surely we need members who are active in forum / game and especially world chat to identify those pilots.

In NO WAY are any of these recruiting debates truly because of you. We are grateful to have such a wonderful pilot in the squad.

We had been tossing the idea of the nlr tag around and you just happened to be the first with it. Which in turn, stirred up a worthwhile friendly debate amongst our members as to how go about recruiting players that we haven't personally asked to join at some point in the game.

I think I can speak for the others in the squad when I say, Thank you for your patience during the process and we are all glad to see you with a [NLR] in front of your name.

I am still waiting to find you in game so we can tear up the skies and down some REDS!
