I'll try to give you the short version. Holler if you have any questions. Prep the bed preferably in the fall with composted cow manure. In the spring use lots of lime (dust from a feed store) and some tomato specific fertilizer. Dont overdo it or you will burn up the plants. Your local nursery (not Home Depot) can tell you what works well with the local soil content. Start your seeds in good quality potting mix and keep the soil moist. When they sprout, use Miracle Gro couple times a week when watering. Use a watering can with a shower type head to ensure that you are watering very gently. If you must use a hose, BE CAREFUL. When you take it out of the pot, very lightly loosen the root ball with your fingers. Plant in prepped soil in plenty of sunlight. As plant grows, prune some of the lowest and or smallest vines so that the better ones get the water and nutrients. Keep soil reasonably moist, but don't flood it. A lot of people don't water enough though.... When watering, don't water the leaves. Water the soil under the plant, using a soaker hose if necessary. Instead of using a stake, use a wire basket. Use some of your wife's old pantyhose to tie the vines to the basket. (Strong, flexible, and lasts in the sun and water for a while). When blooms appear, use tomato bloom spray to pollinate. Bees can be unreliable... I use Ortho Sevin dust for a general pesticide if and when needed. If there is any sign of disease or infestation, immediately cut off a good sample and take it to your local nurseryman. Don't wait.
I think that's about the long and short of it all.
