To me it looks like an American herring gull in winter plumage as good as any.

The one on the press card wears its summer plumage, and is dressed to impress the ladies, as well as any lesser seagulls that may be around.

Ornithologist no, zoologist yes. I don't specialize in birds, but I can tell a Larus argentatus from a L. smithsonianus without too much problem.

I am more like a half-bred ichtyologist with a smackering of human and comparative anatomy, physiology, histology and histochemistry.

This is the current version of my age distribution histogram, showing the typical findings:

1: 14-year-olds, probably 90% males, high on their own testosteron, and low in status and power, make up the greatest single age group.

2: There are surprisingly few people in their early twenties among the players. Probably because of studies, work and the continuous struggle to make an impression upon members of the other sex, they have little time for game playing.

3: The curve shows a large, relaxed bulge starting after 35 and reaching its top at 40-45. People are established and have more time to do what they want. Some might see the peak in activity as a sign of the so-called 40-year crisis, but I prefer to think that most of the victims of that disorder are not Dogfight players, but that they act out their insecurity and aggression on stupider activities.

4: After 55 the number of players declines, but there is a small number of registered players in every 5-year group until the age of 80.

But there are reasons to believe that the pure numbers give a somewhat misleading picture. Consider the typical population pyramid of a developed nation:



Until the age of 50, all the 5-year groups are more or less the same: The number of 20-24 year-olds is roughly the same as the number of 45-50 year-olds, or for that sake the number of 5-9 year-olds.

From the age of 5 to the age of 55 my Dogfight age diagram probably shows the truth: There IS IN FACT a greater percentage of 40-year olds than 20-year olds playing this game, and the dips from 20 to 25 and 30 to 35 are not artefacts but quite real.

After 55, however, the number of people in each 5-year group starts to shrink. There is less than a third left of a group of 50-year olds when they reach the age of 75.

Because the age group is so much smaller, ten 75-year-old Dogfighters represent an almost three times as large a proportion of their age group as ten 55-year olds would do.

Which means that my histogram underestimates the popularity of "Dogfight the game" among senior citizens!

If we look at it in this way, the percentage of Dogfight players in the population increases with age after 55!

If we want to go beyond the pure numbers and find out some more about the popularity of the game among middle-aged and senior citizens, it's easy enough to correct for the error, which is what I have done below. A word of warning, though. The numbers for the upper age groups are small, and do not really allow any solid conclusions.

The age profile of this game's players is quite interesting. There are two groups that completely dominate the game: the 13-15 year-olds and the 30-50 year-olds (with a strange peak at 27!)! There are surprisingly few who fall between or outside those two (or three) categories. I wonder why?
