I personally don't like flying against MOMs in the other modes and I tend to attack non-MOMs first instead. This morning I was the only blue for a bit in our HTC game so it was a little different.
Don't feel bad about your rank and skill; you WILL improve and get better with more practice like ALL of us had to. I still get wadded plenty so it's all good! Your point about scheduling training is a good one. When I was an Enigma there was a section on their site where a member asked about the best flying/fighting style to all the members and there was great discussion. I personally try to avoid the head on shots as I see that as a 50/50 deal. If I'm on you tail instead you cant fire back at me....Surprisingly the advice given by the great aces in history seem to apply in the game as well - Google Noelle, Ginger Lacey or "Sailor" Malan. I would love to see a newbies only area where flying skills could be taught, think that would be very useful and very healthy for the game. I don't think as many would quit playing because of the huge difference in skill sets.
Now that we've (hopefully) got past the girly pic scandal, here's potential fuel for another on the general topic of skill:
My own personal opinion is that actual “skill” (flying and strategic) accounts for not too much, maybe 5%, of a player’s overall force-to-be-reckoned-with quotient (FTBRW). Not to say skill can’t be a decisive factor in the outcome of any game or individual skirmish. More often than not it probably is, especially in match-ups between more or less equally ranked players on teams of more or less equal size (but how often does THAT happen?

)
Otherwise I’d attribute at least 80-85% of FTBRW to “level mojo”, i.e., whatever boost from leveling up one gets in capacity to inflict and resist damage. Based on my own purely subjective impression, this generally seems to include progressively more bang for the bullet, better “eyesight”, thicker “skin”, etc. I don’t know if quickness and control responsiveness also get a boost, or if those are strictly set by the plane’s performance envelope.
The rest (IMO!) is luck of the draw and other sorts of luck (good or bad) independent of actual skill. Things like lag, timing, etc. I also strongly suspect the choice of device the game is played on may play a role one way or the other but I just don’t know for sure.
Given all the above, and the deck being so heavily stacked against noobs, I might even go so far as to say that the purest form of “skill” (un-muddied by level mojo) is demonstrated when an aspirant scores a legitimate kill against a much higher-ranked player (or even successfully avoids being killed by one).
But once a player levels up out of aspirant-hood, he starts receiving the dividend of level mojo, like one of those perks that used to go with cushy government jobs. After this, as any incumbent politician can tell you, reliance on pure skill is not absolutely essential.
Again, this is just my opinion. I do not denigrate the sincerity of anyone’s strongly held conviction that skill is the primary driver of FTBRW. I just don’t share that conviction. That being said, I wouldn’t trade my level mojo for nuttin! I likes it just fine thank you very much!
What say ye all to them apples?
