Oh it's not so easy...did you use a plan from the site I gave you? That looks like construction grade plywood also so you may have to make it a bit bigger since it's not as dense as aircraft or marine grade. So you are throwing it say 10 degrees above the horizon, leaned over to about 1 o'clock 90 degrees to the right of the wind with lots of spin? When it turns which way does it turn?

Ok so maybe not as bad as I thought...sorry I never make wood ones :) Try throwing lower say right at the horizon and lean it over a bit more when you throw say 1:30 - 2:00 and if that helps maybe try a bit more into the wind...say 75 degrees to the right of the wind or so...

I'm dying laughing -- I can't believe how many boomerang fans there are on this forum.

And Jacob, I'm unbelievably jealous! You have fantastic craftsmanship skills, Snide. :cheer:

I actually got into boomerangs last summer. Only have a cheap but very thick & resiliant plastic one. Took a good month to master the flick -- but boy was it satisfying when you finally get a solid return. Within 2-3 months I found myself throwing it at any bird that happened to fly in my proximity. I of course -- failed to hit any of them, ahahah! ;)

Nowadays, I'm still using my plastic one. Purely for fun and for getting a good tan outdoors!

How long have you been practicing this craft? Do you do any other wood working?

I have been throwing Boomerangs for about 5 years and making them for about 3. Do you have a pic of the boom you have been throwing? I pretty much only make competition booms so I don't make any wood really. The strip laminate booms I have shown I didn't make, friends of mine did. It has been said that you can use every woodworking skill on one boomerang if you wanted to try. There are some beautiful ones I have seen that are made from exotic hardwoods and sanded and oiled to 2000 grit then micromeshed to make a mirror shine. They are amazing....lots of intricate inlay and cool designs also. My thing is carbon fibre. I love long distance...I think its crazy to watch a boom fly 150m out and come all the way back. Makes heads turn at the park too :woohoo:

I suck at it! There is a lot to layering spray paint I found out and the temps of the paint and materials matter and the chemicals in the different types and the finish... I only like nice designs so I try to make them look nice but the paint cracks and peels or there is some oil that I didn't get totally clean etc etc etc...It will be done today if it kills me...may be in 2 pieces though  :)

Yeah, I'll get a picture when I get a chance! Like I said -- it's REALLY not all that impressive. It's literally a very large/thick piece of plastic that happens to work as a boomerang. :P

Maaan, those long distance ones sound awesome! Does it move pretty fast when travelling the said 150m?

Well at the apex it's very slow I think the initial release speed is something like a base ball around 100mph and say 60 mph on the way back.

Man im in love. What a beautiful piece of wood. Man u got some serious skillz whiplash. Mine, i still cant get it to come back to me. It goes way up and out, then makes a 90° turn (more or less) and then dives for the deck

Don't worry, Kestrel. If I remember correctly, if you angle the boomer to the right more -- it'll go higher. Try playing with the angles until you figure out the perfect angle to throw. It takes a bit of practice -- but soon, it'll be second nature. :)

Sadly since the only way we have to tell speed is with a high speed camera we don't really know. The best distance boom I ever made I made for who I call "the god of boomerangs!" and you can't really understand how obsessed you can get with boomerangs until you meet him. See video below. But that boomerang thrown by his son (Current US record holder @ 163m) we know threw it over 180m just not in competition so it's not a record. It is also the boom he used this year but since the wind was bad for distance all of us couldn't get big numbers, he won with 131m. I only threw 100m :( . You can learn all about LD here:

www.baggressive.com I'm on the record board at 110m ;)

Here are dumb videos we made at the US national tournament at the God of Boomerangs house. He's in white and you can see some booms in the background.

This is just funny...it's the dog that's snoring btw.

Not wood Phonelic...something like this I guess www.aircraftspruce.ca/catalog/mepages/phenolic.php

Want me to make you one so you can see how it should go...you pick a shape (not a crazy one that will be a pain to figure out please) from that site I gave you. I'll make it out of wood if you want...I generally make Carbon, G10 or Phonelic.

Have a look here to figure out what's wrong:

Well it's counter intuitive. There are 3 main factors, the throwing angle outwards in relation to the horizon, the layover or the angle that the boomerang is leaned over at launch, and the angle to the right of the wind. Also Boomerangs are right or left handed so make sure you have the foils the right way....Kes yours is right handed. So to look at each factor if you throw it lower in relation to the horizon at launch it will zoom higher at the apex and come back higher in the return and vice versa. Generally the lower you throw the less force you need to bring it back. If you aim high you had better be very mighty or it will crash on the way back. For layover, the more horizontal the boomerang is the more it will fight gravity and lift up. Each boomerang can handle only so much layover before turning to the right instead of circling to the left. You want it to go in a level circle for the most part so you find the sweet spot where if you have it too straight up it curves left a bit and crashes and if you have it too layed over it swoops up and then almost back on itself and into the ground. The easiest to figure out is right of the wind. I always start at 90 so face into the wind put out your right arm and point. That is where you throw...if it comes back in front of you and passes on your right side aim more into the wind, if it comes back on your left side aim more to the right of the wind.

Usually I give them a tri-fly (simple plastic boomerang) or say $10 if they don't seem interested. Every one I have lost I eventually got back because of this. Funny thing is if kids find it, when I get it back it's always a bit banged up :)

Hahahah! I guarantee most of them had the intent of keeping it -- but found it too difficult to pick up right away. Kids are a lot more impatient nowadays. :P
