Is that so? I have that, although we are looking at carbon fiber cloth. Maybe plywood covered in carbon so we don't need to use as much carbon.

Well G10 is better imo and cheaper and less work. Laminating carbon fiber to wood is a pain since it needs to be encased. You need molds, a vacuum system and good knowledge of how to make carbon fiber parts...

Here is a simple paper boomerang. There are a few others I found too, just Google "paper boomerang".

How far to you want I have ones that turn around in 5 feet, 10 feet, 20 feet, 40 feet...all they way up to over 100m :). Admittedly until you get to the 20 feet or more it doesn't feel like a real boomerang and the 5 foot ones are little knuckle rangs that you flick with your finger off of your knuckle. They more just go in a skinny oval rather than a circle, but I did hear that the distance world record holder was able to throw, not flick, them hard enough to make them fly in a circle but he's makes more spin than anyone has ever seen.

Sry the reply took so long. I needed to measure my yard to c whats the max ican use. Seems the biggest circle path i could find is about 25-30 yards max. Would one of those be possible to do?

I had asked Snid for some suggestions on where to buy boomerangs, since I wanted to try them out so I could better appreciate a possible hand-made beauty by The Man himself. You can do this many different ways, but here's what I did.

www.boomerangman.com was one of Snid's recommendations for someone who sells boomerangs that work. Rich Harrison owns the shop, and he is a class act. I ordered some bundles from him, a combo of a Darnell Tri Fly and Pro Fly, and a two-fer of a Fun Fly foamie indoor tri-blade for the kids. Separate descriptions are here:

www.boomerangman.com/product/darnell-tri-fly-/

www.boomerangman.com/product/darnell-pro-fly/

www.boomerangman.com/product/fun-fly-foa...boomerang-2-for-695/

Turns out the foam indoor 'rangs are so much fun, I am confiscating them from the kids. Mine! Mine! Well, maybe that's because my yard isn't quite big enough for learning how to throw a boomerang. But with some indoor skills, I was able to quickly learn how to throw the Darnell Tri Fly. The Pro Fly boomerang is going to take some work, plus I think it needs a little wind or at least some blade tuning before I can get it to come back to me with no wind.

Here's some low quality video clips pieced together: First is the Tri Fly in my side yard. I actually caught the Tri Fly on this attempt. The second clip is the Pro Fly boomerang, which flew around and hovered, but got caught high up in the big palm tree. Good thing there was construction debris lying around, and I was able to poke it down with a long piece of pvc pipe. The final few clips are in the family room with the Fun Fly. The kids love 'em, and I love 'em even more. I couldn't wait until the kids were in bed so I could throw them around. Actually my 8 year old came out of her room wondering what I was doing. Busted.

So, now that I'm properly addicted... ;)

Why are some boomerangs (e.g., my Darnell Pro Fly) thrown with elbow (pointy middle) starting facing upward, while others are thrown with the elbow facing the ground (kind of like a hatchet if the hatchet blade were really long)? The leading/trailing edges are still the same, so aerodynamically nothing is different.

If I draw an analogy to my Tri Fly, it doesn't matter - one method assumes two out of three blades, while the other method assumes the other two.

I think what you are referring to is more of a preference. I will give you a bit of teminology...if you lay a boomerang on a table orientied like a capital A without the cross stick and the curved side up flat(ish) side down the arm on the right is called the lead or lift arm and the arm on the left is called the dingle or trailing arm and the middle is called the elbow. Triblades don't have different arm names.

You can throw a boom by either arm since you have only rotated it and it does that anyway. The only exception is LD in that the curve is severe enough in the shape that the boom hits your arm if you try and throw dingle arm. I generally find I get more spin dingle and more distance lift arm.

I'm just throwing and seeing where it goes. As for layover (? tilt from vertical of the throw), on the first clip with the Tri Fly, I had pretty much zero angle, although that fear of burying the boomerang into the dirt might have influenced a little bit of lean lol. I was also trying for no upward trajectory, since it has plenty of lift and tended to balloon if I pointed it up. But again, for fear of having to dig it out of the hillside below the house, I might have aimed up a wee bit.

The second clip was the first and only time I threw the Pro Fly. That thing needs a much bigger place than my yard, especially as I figure it out. The circle was SO big, and it flew over the creek to the left... if it dumped into the thick bushes down there, it would be history. Our pool contractors have found two rattlesnakes in the past week, so there is no way I'm going down there to search for a $7 boom. (Although one of Snid's, I'd put on the snake boots and machete and go hunting.)

The indoor clips with the Foam Fun Flyers do have a little upward trajectory. I'm still trying some tuning (wing twist and flatter dihedral) to see if it can float less or at least float later in the circle. Right now, I have a hard time getting it all the way back to me. Aiming a little upward seemed to help, but maybe not. Anyway, the current path is kind of like a spiral inward, so I have to step forward to catch it. The kids throw it hard and it turns right away (within 5 feet) and circles them twice! I can't do that : (

U know i was alil less timid of it hitting the ground until jacob snapped his. Then i was really worried. I would stand there for over a minute conning myself to through it. Knowing that about half way through the cirle it would shoot up like a rocket anyway. The one i have never even came close to even trying to return.

Sp33dy, check out the links I posted - you could be out throwing in a matter of a day or two, for a few bucks, much better than the non-flying junkie stuff that dime stores sell. Snid also recommended www.flight-toys.com and www.leggacyboomerangs.com

I just want to get somewhat decent at throwing and a little tuning (using indestructible plastic! these are workhorses!) before I get something that I might be more afraid to throw.

Thanks Manfred and yes the ones I make are supposed to be for experienced throwers since I don't make them from wood and they need a lot of spin.

Also Manfred since you are diggin the booms so much I can get you into the entire world if you like. If you pm me your address I will get the 'god of boomerangs' to send you a welcome starter package from the USBA. You get some easy to throw booms and you info on joining the USBA. The best thing as I mentioned to Slender is come to a tournament...now I can hear your brain as you read this..a tournament yeah right! Well our sport is very small and super friendly and we have plenty of novice throwers that will make you feel right at home. Everyone helps and answers so many questions and will also tune up everything you have (Or buy there) so you can go home twice the thrower you were when you started. I threw for a year before I started and I was a middle of the road thrower but I learned more in that day then I had the whole year before! I come to Ohio a lot of tournaments so if you ever want to join us please let me know it would be fantastic and trust me you will have sooo much fun.

Is there any sort of "target" practice when it comes to the USBA tournaments?

I get good returns -- but I find I really excell at hitting targets with my boom. Namely friends & family thinking they can outrun the flight path, hahahah. I've been setting up posts with small water balloons atop and getting pretty decent at it.

Is there anything like this with the USBA, Snide?

I don't see USBA competitions for it, but this guy is a crack up:

The delayed fist pump is pretty funny. But I can see the motivation. Hey he gets some serious spin going. I must be holding it wrong, or maybe throwing too hard and not snapping enough.

Edit: Whoops I see that was already posted way back when. I thought I recognized it! I googled "Korean target boomerang."

Well since when you hit something the boom stops returning generally, no not like that. Accuracy is gauged just like it is for aboriginals that is closeness to the throwers original throwing spot. Aboriginals throw and try and hit their feet with no touching or altering it's path once thrown. The boom you have I find doesn't provide much interest after a bit in that it's very easy to bring it back and catch it, I think you should try the other way, well it's what I find interesting anyway, try distance! It is quite something to see a boomerang fly over 100m out and fully return, and it's a complete other to throw it! The most fun I get is throwing an 80m carbon fiber 'marathon' at my local park. I have yet to have someone not stop to watch at least a few throws as it goes from one side of the park and back and I catch it. See the more distance the harder the return. I also happen to be a distance boom and kylie specialist in that my booms and sticks won the last tournaments, not in my hands sadly but at least I was part of the win.

Why not do what Manfred did and call the boomerang man Rich Harrison and tell him what interests you and he won't steer you wrong! theboomerangman.com (Hey I just noticed I'm in the pic on page 1...

Hey Snid,

Do I have it right, that there are essentially two primary kinds of shorter range boomerangs, one that is "sport" with more typical speed and then hover at the end, and then ones made for competition throwing that zoom in a fast circle and come back at high speed?

That's probably fair to say...I will tell you what I would do if I were you...you can get tri-flys made from different materials. There are about a million plans to reshape the heads into a new boom. The one I made for Slender was a modified ABS tri-fly. Check out kutek.net they are really easy to reshape to do whatever you want. Heck even the standard poly pro trifly works well.

Thanks Snid. Speaking of Tri Flys, mine floated into one of the big palm trees yesterday evening. Actually, the Pro Fly went there too, but I was able to retrieve it. Tri Fly has not been sighted yet! I need to go back in there later today with my snake boots on.

That palm is a problem anyway, and it harbors critters too close to what will be the pool area in a couple months. It may not be there for long, grrr. Shouldn't have trees in short landing area. I wasn't spinning enough, and all my throws were ballooning and dropping around 8:00 in the circle, not quite making it back onto the flat ground and landing on the hill and in the tree..

So I went back inside and threw the foamies around. They are so much fun!

Oh man I can feel the bug starting in you...wait until you try doubling! You throw 2 boomerangs at once together and they are tuned such that the insider hovers down in 6 seconds and the outsider in 12 or 13 seconds. And if that doesn't sound hard enough in competition you have to do trick catches on each. So they would call like one hand behind your back and hacky for example. So you throw both booms at the same time and then you have to catch 1 behind your back with one hand and the other you kick or hacky with your foot and then catch it :woohoo: There are guys I know that can do that in their sleep! I can do it sometimes but I'm not a trick catch guy...sure is a lot of fun to try though.
