I come and go from the game and what strikes me is how much things change when i come back in.
I was never a fan of the head on attack tactic because i cant hit a barn door at long range and much prefer dogfighting so what to make of the new habit that players seem to have of opening fire as soon as they see you, often at insanely long ranges?! It strikes me as a problem, how to close the range to my preferred firing range of 100 yards when i am under fire from 10,000?
For those who have played with me you will have seen what i do.
1) always try to have a height advantage.
2) I try to use the fact that most players are bad shots, if i fly at 90 degrees to their attack i present a full deflection shot which most cannot handle. I watch their tracer falling well behind while they close the range. This is a finely judged thing, if i wait too long they will get their aim right and blow me apart but often i can let them get very close before having to take action. (sometimes they run out of ammo at this point which is hilarous)
3) Now the tricky bit, Once i judge they are close enough i have to turn into them and try to get past and onto their tail. I used to barrell roll but got shot down too often. I got my inspiration from the CORKSCREW, the defensive manouver used by RAF heavy bombers in WW2. Its like a big square roll, I climb up, bank and pull sideways then pull down, roll over and repeat in the opposite direction.
And it actually works!,Not so good with 2 bombs but with 1 you are still fast enough to manouver. This will get me past players about 80% of the time even when under fire the whole time. I have gone dogfight missions, (15 kills) on the same belt of ammo while hearing pilots complain about running out after 1 or 2 kills.
Anyway no particular reason for posting this but it might help if like me you are tired of gettin shot when planes are still out of artillary range.
Is Wolfpack the best squad in DF? Hell yeah! Hoooowwwwllllllllllll!
Fly safe and shoot straight. Would love to hear of other peoples tactics, Bear
WTB, its always good to see you on the forum, and I love your in game tactics.... boom and zoom as I recall. Anyway the 90 degree max deflection shot you described is outstanding and I use it all the time to get the red close enough to shoot. It is the most difficult shot in the game, so just show red your flank and let him close. Im not quite sure I completely understand the corkscrew you described so I will have to go practice.
If I can add one thing to all that.... what I have found is to be unpredictable. Don't try the same tactic more than once or twice before mixing it up. If you haven't tried a head on attack, let the red get close with the 90 degree shot, then turn into him and attempt a snap shot.... he wont expect it if the last 2 or three times you did something else. Maybe next time turn away from him instead of towards him. Its good to be as unpredictable as possible.
Finally, never allow a red that gets past to get behind ya. Always give chase to the ones that fly past without being killed. I can say that in 90% of the cases they will continue towards their target, and you have a nice easy shot from behind. Of course that isn't the case in a df mission, but in bombing games don't let the easy kill continue to your base or carrier!
Anyone else like to add some tactics? What works, what doesn't.. that kind of stuff.
