Speaking of skepticism...
Last night B and I were in a few missions together along with a no-name B had been playing with earlier. The no-name (four dots in some annoying configuration or other, like high dot, two low dots, high dot. How you type those apostrophe' level high dots, anyway?) ... the no-name starts right in on Brian with fairly well expressed invective like, "Nice spawn killing last game B Strachan" It went back and forth for I don't know how many rounds, Bri trying to explain his actions, the invisible cheat trying to characterize him as a spawner...I jumped into the fray and said, "Hey no-name...what's with the no name?" This players proceeds to reveal that he's someone well know to both B and me. "You know me well, Wig, we've spoken many times." "Okay, so, who are you? And why the invisibility cheat?" "I can't say who I am, this is my spy account." Oh christ on a graham cracker crust. "Spy account? Spying on what?" The mission ended. Next game, me and no-name, no B. "So, no-name, how's the spying coming along for ya?" "Wig, I know it upsets you. I have much respect for you so I'll just leave." Which he/she/it then did.
Can I just say...What the effin' aytch? "Spy account"?!?! Are we in the third grade? Or working for the GOP? (same intellectual level) B and I kicked it around some just now and decided the speculation from other players that it might be an undercover Slenderman doesn't quite wash. I don't believe Slender would choose a no-name name even if he did go covert which, as moderator, he might logically do. Swopwith has been out of sorts over spawn killing lately, but again, he's too honorable a player to "spy" as a nameless cheater even if he were to "spy".
What is it about this game that engenders such fierce senses of indignation, revenge-lust, vigilantism and moral outrage? I think there are better ways to play than spawn killing. I think, too, that anytime you put more than one person in a room together you're going to have conflicts and disagreements about "right and wrong". Put 40k of 'em in a virtual "room" and you'd damn well better get okay with spawn killing, team killing, verbal abuse, invisible snipers and racist/sexist/homophobic pigs. Aside from the latter they almost all exist in one gray area or another. Life is comprised of gray areas no "council" can clear up. Welcome to the microcosm of the "real world" that is Dogfight.
Swop, I got taunted and verbally abused by a Falcon the other day. I know he isn't representative of the code to which your clan tries to adhere. Neither are some other Falcons. No amount of vetting and training and evaluation and "FF forever" is ever going to render your filtering system impenetrable to the occasional sleepless night, bad day at the office, personal tragedy, or flat out bad apple...you get my point. We're all human, we have moments when we slip. Nobody's perfect. I myself got called out yesterday or the day before for "spawning on deck". "Wig, what's wrong? That isn't your style." These were players I barely knew or didn't know at all. Reputations carry across this entire community. So, yeah, I was ashamed. Sput was, I hope, ashamed when I called him out for going no-name rogue. Streetsbadnews is not known as a spawner or abusive player, neither is DIESEL, nopr is anyone I know of in M.O.M. I should be a notorious sniper on deck, I do it enough! 111th KptnSingh, a good friend and good Falcon, used to quit out of missions if anyone failed to promise, "No soldiers on deck." Now, with a little more balance and some deeper understanding of the difference between "cheating" and "tactics" - tactics which are, by the way, available to every single one of us so that playing field is nicely even - now...Singh and I have had some lovely sewing circle moments sharing red/blue sniper residence on a carrier together!
I've been asked for my views on "tactics" in general, spawn killing in particular, sniping on deck, the works. I'll go on record now as saying, "Uh...I dunno. Up to you, I guess." As Swop himself has said, spawning has its place. It also has the potential to be abusive. I have no compunction about taking a tank to the enemy base and blasting away in a CTC when I know there's a red sniper on a boat. Tit for tat. You won't let my guys land, fine...i won't let yours take off. Do the same to my team if you get the chance. We all know how to get around these situations - including simply quitting out of the game, something I've done a lot lately when it's that "swarm and spawn" feeding frenzy. It's absolutely no skin off my touch screen to quit out and join another game, and certainly nothing ignoble or dishonorable to spare yourself being someone's sitting duck.
Swop, I don't think the incident with Streets was typical of him. I've had moments when "I don't care" would've been mild compared to my own language. Utter frustration with the technical failings of the game can elicit some pretty un-wiggly words. Ask my friend 111th ShilohBiggs, he's seen me declare "This fking game is ridiculous and I'm through with it." And stronger words than that. Those aren't typical "wig moments" but they happen. I'd ask that you exercise your capacity for understanding and for forgiveness and let this one pass as "one of those things". If it happens with Streets again, we'll talk again. You know you can count on my word on that.
You, Strachan bashing cowardly "spy account" no-name? Drop the veil or drop the indignation. If you're someone I know, especially someone I know and like, I don't like how you're handling yourself. Simmo and I go back and forth on similar issues and don't always or often agree with each other's slant, but Rob doesn't hesitate to say what he thinks, AS HIMSELF, sticks to his guns when he feels he's right and admits when he may have been wrong. I hope I do the same. Your turn. Drop the dots, quit cheating then hypocritically calling someone as stand up as B a cheater, and let's initiate a productive discourse. "Spy account"? Really? Really? C'mon...
