I got in to the airport late last night. My wife had been fretting about the Cocos/San Marcos fire. The southern edge of that south-moving fire was about 2 miles north of us. On the drive in, I caught an eyeful of a bright smoke plume to our northeast, startling because it was night time, and lit up from below by the fire. Fortunately there wasn't much wind by then.

We've been watching news coverage through the night. They are more about shock value than information, so it's hard to tell what streets and intersections they are showing. As of this morning, the San Marcos fire still is about a mile and a half away. Hopefully they are getting a handle on it. Winds are back up with sunrise, but it's supposed to be calmer than yesterday. But not any cooler, really tougb on firefighters.

The kids' schools are closed today. I will work at home. We're packed and ready to go if we get a call, or just think it's getting too close.

Luna your help is greatly appreciated. Reverse 911 isn't working perfectly, and some people are ignoring the calls. I got three calls from the system yesterday, all in error, so residents might treat a real call as a false alarm. Your physical knocks on doors are much needed and potentially a life saver. That said, don't put yourselves in undue danger.

One or two fires I can comprehend as Nature's Fury. Or accidents of people. But the prospect of arson really pisses me off. If someone is setting these purposefully, I will be at the front of the line to swing the axe.

Now, who is ready for some milkshakes?

Manfred

Ugh... Digital milkshake hangover... that was some STRONG stuff Manfred. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to fix the burn marks on the front of my plane.

Camp Pendleton "Tomahawk" Fire is 20% contained. We're working to keep it from spreading off base, and plans have been set to start using military aircraft from the Marine Corps Air Station to assist with the fire department. I'm lucky to be stationed in the coastal part of CP, but things are going to be busy.

Happy Birthday Butcher!

Please be safe Luna.

All these milkshakes... This place is turning into an ice cream parlor. Oh well, who cares? It's all money. Now I wonder if we can make milkshakes out of Bailey's? That might bring in a few bucks.

Yes the spikey milkshakes are almost half Baileys. We started serving them in smaller mugs, but people were ordering 6 at a time. Did you see my flaming shake? A layer of burning meringue.

And no calories!

And it looks like I just stirred up a hornet's nest of sorts when I asked if its the plane or the colors that the MORAFs (and those close to it) miss.

That aside... how's everyone here?

I wonder if Zuperman ever comes in here. He's never graced the bar with making his presence known.

Well, just in case you do Mr Z, I'll make you an offer. C'mon in, and the drinks will be on the house. Furthermore, we won't piss and moan about the game, lag, paint, or even the price of tea in China. We'll talk about just about anything that is not even remotely associated with the game.

This bar is designed to be everyone else's refuge from it all, so it might as well be yours too. (Although in a way it already is. :))

Stop in and see us anytime. I won't even ask for cheaper property taxes. I promise.

Consider yourself invited.

Hey guys. Thanks for your concern Manny, I hope I'm not boring you all with my posts of this stuff, but since you asked:

The initial Camp Pendleton fire, Tomahawk, has increased its affected area to 6500 acres, and it's containment has reduced to 15% percent from the previous 20 percent.

Another fire sparked in the Las Pulgas and Margarita areas of the base in the afternoon, and has forced evacuations in those areas. My duty station in Del Mar received dozens of evacuated personnel from the Margarita zone. By the end of the day, our clinic was full of military and firemen, some of which I had to help treat for heat exhaustion.

When we drove back to Del Mar, we passed a fire that was so darn close to the road. It wasn't there when we first arrived, but it came strong and fast. I've never been that close to such a large blaze before; wish I had my phone with me at the time to steal a few shots.

Everyone's working around the clock to contain these things. I might be called back to the clinic later on... no rest for the weary, huh?

But while I'm here, M, I think I'll just have some water. This heat is crazy.

I heard that Las Pulgas spread very quickly. This afternoon's winds were very odd, not as strong as a typical Santa Ana, but sporadic and almost random. Seemed like a strong predominant on-shore wind was fighting against a Santa Ana. Lots of swirling.

Here's the view before we evac'd:

And here's a shot from our Sorrento Valley hotel after sunset. No those aren't clouds. The dispersed smoke over the ocean probably is a combination of Carlsbad and San Marcos fires.

San Marcos fire has moved away from us. Evac orders for our area were lifted at midnight, so we came back this morning. Luna, Pendleton looks crazy! It's not desert winds today, just fairly normal on-shore winds, but it's stoking all of the remaining fires. Plus all of the vegetation is so dried out from a week of 100+ temps and dry air. Sounds like a new fire started on the north end of Pendleton.

A 17 and 18 year old were arrested on suspicion of trying to start a fire in Escondido. Are people THAT bored that this is what they consider fun?

A few years ago, a kid started a fire in a shopping mall in a province here called Cebu. It was new year's eve at the time and the kid must've thought it would be fun to light up those fireworks/firecrackers on display... It did not end well...

Manfred and Luna, does CA still frown on controlled burning? I've seen and read several articles and news stories talking about how unpopular that is in some places. In the fire prone areas that I have lived in (FL, KY, and even AR in some places) controlled burns help a lot to prevent a lot of small fires from going nuts. I've heard that a lot of the "conservationists" (read people who have never left the city, but know everything about the woods) have made it difficult to use controlled burning as a control method in CA. I'm just curious. Is that true? Fire is obviously a natural way that things remain in balance, but it sure helps when there has been a little rain and the wind isn't blowing 100.

I'll grant you, my knowledge on the effectiveness of those methods is based on use in the southern and central US. I'll also ask, is there is any special reason that controlled burning is less effective in your area?

We'll turn the JR into a fire management and safety classroom for a while. That suits me fine. I like learning new things.

I've been playing going on 2 years and I'm only level 24 I think. Of course, it would help if I didn't take multi month long breaks in between playing, and then only play a week or so when I do.
