Manfred, I'm very glad to hear that you lived to fight another day. We have those in FL too, but just not as many. I wonder if I had to go NOW what I would take? I'll have to think about that... Our most imminent threat every year is hurricanes, but we live pretty far inland. Hurricane Charley still managed to provide us with a breezy 110mph wind at my house. But, we generally don't run the risk of evacuation orders.

Fire Update, parts of Camp Pendleton are evacuating, including nonessential personnel in our command.

Some flareups overnight in the Bernardo fire, but firefighters were on it. Looking pretty windy this morning. If firefighters can hold these down today, there's better weather tomorrow. Resources must be spreading a bit thin however.

Update: Air quality is pretty bad here on base, ash and smoke all over. My unit's been called to assist with evacuations in the housing areas, so I won't be able to get back to you guys for awhile. I'll check in soon.

Looks like two homes burned down in Carlsbad fire. No news on Bernardo fire, my wife is watching the hillside for flareups from yesterday. Some fires inland too. Geez, whole county is in flames..

Now you know how we have been feeling the past two summers. No rain + no snowfall the past winter + desert air + mountain terrain + pine beetlekill + humans being idiots = massive, unstoppable blazes...

I would start with being a wreckage remover, maybe? This IS a war zone, and with the rocket launcher... this place looks like an airplane graveyard... without the planes below ground...

Ok... Here's how we're gonna handle the job apps. I'm gonna be crazy busy for a few days, with just the occasional opportunity to check in. I'm a control freak over this bar usually, but I'm going to try something different.

If anyone is currently looking or employment here, here's what your gonna have to do. Convince me, Manfred, Luna, and Big C if he is in, that we actually NEED more personnel, and that you are right to fill that position. To my staff, please feel free to comment publicly, privately (to me), or not at all, as to whether you are convinced that we do in fact need more help right now. My goal is not to put my staff in any controversial positions, but rather to reward them for the great job they do by giving them a slice of the bars management. Manfred already gets basically whatever he wants here, just because he's awesome, but I'm going to go a step further and encourage our staff to help make these decisions.

So, little update. It's been a hectic day. Fires have been popping all over the county, forcing evacuations all over San Marcos, Fallbrook, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, Escondido, and other areas. I've been all over Camp Pendleton all day helping to get everything in order. Pretty hectic.

I've been keeping contact with friends and family throughout the area, and they've been sending me updates. Most of my immediate family is fine and has not required evacuation, but others haven't been so lucky.

My niece sent some pictures. Her high school was put on indoor lockdown because of the air quality, until they gave the go for evacuation. From what I know, the school districts in the area has shut down for the rest of the week. She lives in Oceanside, and the fires are so widespread that they've seemed to form a "ring of smoke" around the area. A couple photos she and my brother sent:







A friend of mine, who lives in Fallbrook, sent me these:







Pretty crazy stuff. Tomorrow's forecast is 104*. My best wishes to all the firefighters who will work through the night to contain the blaze.
