Its a long story, but one worth telling.
In the beginning when I first joined, WP was a difficult squad to get into. The recruitment guidelines were strictly adhered to. No welcome post, no WP. Invite only, and the only one who could or would invite was Digger. After much discussion we, the Pack, decided to expand the membership and loosened our recruitment guidelines. The Pack grew faster, but with faster growth comes a greater possibility the recruits were not going to be loyal, play within our guidelines, etc. Player turnover became a small issue, but with that comes the realization that attrition is actually healthy because it tends to retain only the most loyal Wolves.
Nothing against Cush, TX, and it would seem Huck eventually, but the fact of the matter is their decision to leave us speaks to their loyalty to our squad
and only our squad. They are great folks and great friends and the fact that they are leaving doesn't change who they are, nor does it bring their integrity into question, at least not in my mind. All we can do is wish them well and thank them for their service to Wolf Pack.
So what's the answer about the attrition then? Well, based on my experience I would say that if we continue to try to grow, we will have attrition. It comes with the territory. Should we tighten our recruitment guidelines back to the way they were? That would make acceptance to WP more difficult and lessen the likelihood of losing close friends, members of our family if you will, when they leave the squad. Is there a better way to gauge a persons loyalty prior to acceptance? I don't have a ready answer for these questions because I believe it is a balance between growth rate and getting only folks who will be here for the long haul, through the tough times and the good times.
We should all understand that there is no way I know of to predict how long a player will be a satisfied member of Wolf Pack, and want to stick around. Some folks decide they want to have their own squad to manage, others want to go where their friends are, and others just like to be around the big time personalities.... like hanging out with the cool kids as it were. So we have to take attrition in stride and each one of us make their own decision to stay or go as circumstances dictate. Even though I take it personal when any Wolf leaves us, I think its very important to respect their individual decisions. You all know we recruit top notch players and top notch people. They are still top notch folks even if they move on to greener pastures. We have lost some really good folks along the way and while each one stings I realize that is more my own pride stinging than anything since these folks were considered my friends. As my friends, they are entitled and encouraged to be happy in any of their endeavors, including a new squad. It's always tough but not a show-stopper.
My personal policy, and this isn't written anywhere, is the circumstances surrounding a member leaving dictate whether or not they would be allowed to rejoin the Pack. Its is a case-by-case basis I make those decisions carefully because at the end of the day loyalty is a wolf trait we try to emphasize. I am not a fan of squad-hoppers as it were, and we have rejected folks for being squad-hoppers because as such their loyalty comes into question.
When the dust settles we should be left with a roster with players who want to be here, are happy here, and are loyal to Wolf Pack. That is the best we can hope for and exactly what we want in our squad. The way I see it we are stronger at the end of the day rather than weaker. We sure still have some very deadly, very talented, and very personable people on our roster. People I am happy to call friends and brothers in arms.
I salute each and every one of you, past and present wolves, and gladly stand beside each one of our current wolves.
TX, Cush, Huck (maybe) I wish you the best. Happy hunting my friends and thanks for being a part of Wolf Pack.
