Let's start with Legionz, lol.. Brother were all truly pleased, Correction THRILLED!! That the operation went well, and I think most of us are smiling at some pain med induced comments.. This might be the turn around that we had Prayed for.. Sure hope so..
On this next one I don't want to get lost in the weeds about A/C identification and screw up the great story about Dads Psych ops super dangerous flights.. The CIA tried a similar tactic in VN.. Didn't work, and many of the same airframes that were used for the failed program were converted to the "snoopy" mini gun ships.. There's a bizarre sorta karma in that that scares the you know what out of me.. On the greatest generation.. my Dad was in the Navy in WWII, he trained troops (LST stuff) in San Diego., Gloria and I live in a seriously OLD neighborhood here in sun city, one of the first, if not the first senior retirement areas in the US, and we see members of TGG every time we go out.. It's one of the plus things about living here.. endangered species all..
On the C-47.. It might not be, how bout checking Pops records on this one, read on..There's another plane that is a near twin of the 47, it's the C-46.. It looks close to identical, but has more verticle windshields, that the one in the pic has, and not all C-47s have the port side cockpit door that's shown.. The 46 is also a taller bird by about 5 feet, and it looks taller than I remember the 47 to be.. You guys can google it if you want, I tried to get clarification and couldn't.. Again let's not get lost about ID stuff and lose Dads great history..
I'm a bit of a fanatic on both birds as my first flight was in 65, on a 47 (DC-3 version) and we had them all the time in and out of Cavite.. First time I saw one take off I thought something was wrong with the landing gear, turns out that's how it got its nickname (goony bird) the hydrolic's can only support lifting one gear at a time.. What I remember most about my first flight was how you had to sort of pull yourself along after you were onboard because of the angle of the fuselage.. The era of the tail draggers was still in effect.. Viper was talking about radial or reciprical gas engines, and turbo props, which is just a jet engine powering a prop.. My rate in the Navy was an ADJ or jet engine mechanic.. I can tell you jets are boring compared to radial engines.. One of the old planes I had the pleasure of flying on was a P2V that had both jets (to get airborn and on station) and the huge WWII radial gas engines that are more like a Swiss watch than an engine.. A Swiss watch that puts out 3500 hp, and has 18 unmuffled cylinders.. (Proll'y why I like Harley's) the first time I flew in one I thought the airframe was going to come apart on take off.. Noise beyond belief, shaking everywhere so everything's a blur.. Then after a LOT more runway than I was used to using we sorta limped into the air.. The old times (12 man air crew) were all laughing at the kid.. (me) to this day I've tried to figure out if I looked scared, or awed.. I also remember looking out and seeing the wings flapping around like they were made out of balsa wood (Our P3's were solid fuel filled wings that didn't move) I'm guessing I looked terrified..
