Very true. I started this game with the name Mastersword1987, a nod to my first and favorite game sires, The Legend of Zelda. But when tgog started his shenanigans, I changed to The Doctor as a way to fight this dalek character and maybe cause the situation to end. It's gotten to the point now, however, that I may end up having to stick with the name. Most people recognize me as 'doc' now, and the antics of tgog has not really gone away like I had hoped. The upside is, my tags are clean and mean something. The point is everyone needs to have an identity on this game, but some people are here for the sole purpose of causing issues. I'm not sure if offensive names are reportable but if someone is serious about playing this game you could try and get them to changing their name.

Well Dave I don't think that you can use any name you like. To say his name in public is punishable by law in my country, so is the hand movement that comes with those words.
I don't know if it can cause Zup any legal problems but I sure don't think that he should allow it.

One of early forum posts was to put "Hitler " on the blacklist. He was flying around spouting about everyone he hated.
That is Hitler- space -smiley face.

I posted a description of what I saw and within a few minutes a moderator posted back that he was now banned. I'm happy to say that name is dead in dogfight.

I sometimes look up his ranking just as a reference to see how many players are in the game. He is listed as +/- 174000 with the notable stats of 0 kills, 2 deaths, 23 crashes, 2 wins.

There is also a "hitler" He is ranked something like #278974 and has the notable stats of 0 kills, 1 death, 22 crashes, 0 wins.

The difference of 2 wins seperates them by + 100,000 ranks!

(On a sad note, I suspect there are many accounts whose stats are worse.)

BTW, "heil Hitler" does not appear in the game rankings so he must have changed it. Unfortunately that means that this jerk is probably still in the game.

Not quite sure how we went from dr Dave to Hitler but let me say this: in my country it's illegal to discriminate against someone just because of their name, race, creed, sexual orientation, religion or affiliation with an organization. It's freedom of expression. Swop made a good point on the tgog thing that I'd like to reinforce here: just because we find someones name or jokes offensive doesn't mean we have the right to harrass them for it. Sure Hitler murdered tens of millions of people. And yea i'll even admit it chafes my tail feathers every time i see someone flying using the name Hitler, but if someone used the name genghis khan, nobody would cry about it even though Khan is widely regarded by historians to be every bit as bad as Hitler. My point here is why do we say this name or that name is ok but others aren't. I'll give you another example: there is a misfit who goes by my nuts in game. Nobody tells him to change his name.Even though his banner clearly shows which meaning of the phrase he's referring to. But if i were to try and use the name scrotal torment either as a squad name or my in game name, you all would have something to say about it. I know bc at least one mod told me to change my squad name when i first started the wraiths as scrotal torment. Now that you guys know me, you would likely poke fun at me a but if i did that, but back then you guys assumed i was some immature tween obsessed with my balls. So i conclude with this: whether it's Hitler, genghis Khan, or scrotal torment, if someone wants to use a particular name we have no right to say they can't or harass them just bc we don't like their name. And until zup puts an all inclusive definition of what is and isn't ok to use as names i.e. "the following names and variations if these names are strictly banned from use in the game" , our only recourse is to try and be the bigger men and women by first giving the pilot a chance to explain why that name and then get to know that pilot before we pass judgment. As we saw with tgog all it took was an uproar after he/she crossed a sensitive line for things to die down and only then after it was brought to light.

I don't think that it's that easy HD. You might have your freedom of speech but other countries (which also have freedom of speech) forbid you from saying this players name in public. That could give Echoboom legal problems. Not only because the game is available worldwide but also because Echoboom is in Spain which is a member of the EU.

I thought i did, i might've missed it though. All I'm getting at here is that just because it's illegal doesn't mean they're enforcing it. The police of the eu have bigger fish to fry than echoboom. Not only that but there's always gonna be a Hitler or a Saddam somewhere in the world. It appears to me that if zup were worried about potential legal issues stemming from the use of a name by someone outside the eu (something which he can prove that he ultimately has very little control over) then he would have specifically forbidden the use of those names in no unclear terms. Which brings us back to the realm of df street justice as it were. And while i do enjoy these hot topic debates (I'm like a moth to a flame in that respect ) i still feel that not even zup really has the right to say that certain names aren't allowed. And I'm not dismissing the potential legal ramifications of him allowing it, because to do so leaves him open on the other side to discrimination lawsuits from countries like America. In the end i think law enforcement around the world look at this game, consider their own laws and decide that ultimately this game and the names chosen by it's players pose no real threat to the individual governments and therefore it becomes financially unfeasible to prosecute an individual or a company for allowing the use of certain names. And i can promise you bell that if you say "Hitler" on here or at a real world pub, you won't be winding up in cuffs because i think those events are so far in the past that the cops aren't gonna care.

I've seen other players going off on him but I have never seen him actively insulting anyone. I imagine that he would get banned pretty quickly if he was mouthing off.

"My Nuts" ? Well... I always felt that it was a bit of a euphemism for many other words. Heck, some might take offense to "hammer tool" for the same reason.

"uprick" was a name that always bothered me because it felt insulting but he always defended it by saying he meant up Rick.

No big deal really.

Now, the ones I can't stand, and I think should have to change or be banned are the ones who use only .. .. . Or , , , or ' ' ' These are the guys who are taking advantage of everyone else. I can't see them. I wish the mods would get on them, but oh well.

There were some old forum discussions about people using only characters which would not show up in game. Zup fixed that somehow. There obviously are some invisible characters still. You can tell by the guys whose names are off set from the left by only spaces. Yea! I'm talking to you Maxy boy.

Oh I freaking HATE those punctuation names! Aaargh! I go after them first every time. But bear in mind though, whatever stupid "name" they come up with to try and stay hidden, that yellow rank insignia is always directly above the plane pointing down at them. I've actually seen a couple that I could see BETTER because there were no letters above the plane to distract the eyes - just a yellow rank insignia looming over Mr. ". , . " like a golden beacon of death, screaming out "PLEASE FIRE here Here HERE! IM AN IDIOT THAT NEEDS KILLING!"

The yellow beacon only works for me with the star insignias. The swords are nearly invisible. It is easier for me to see their shots than the yellow blobs. (Old man eyes)

To be fair, I didn't start a war and wipe millions of people off he face of the earth, so my name might be less offensive (it's actaully old nick name "Hammer" and a cool band "Tool" with a _ between them).

I guess in the wild west of dog fight, we just set up a lynch mob and hound people with really offensive names unit they change it or stop playing.
