Have you ever played a game/simulation that dropped you from the match when you were killed? They're out there. It inspires a whole different kind of gameplay.
You may not be loosing anything physical, but being denied access to the match/arena/etc. isn't fun at all. Experience/immersion players don't want game death, and the greatest/fastest score progression is usually found in those matches so the stat masters don't want to be shutout either.
They also can include some kind of campaign chain; just like our training levels, if you don't complete the required match, you don't get the next (bigger, better) stage of the campaign. You typically get to a point where you're forced to use teamwork to progress.
