So , just now i was doing some problems of conservation of linear momentum.

The problem is : two astronauts of mass 120 kg in a closed spaceship are travelling in space with a speed of 15kmph.
They decide to perform sliming exercises and reduce their mass to 90 kg.
If the astronauts are successfull , then what is the final velocity of the spaceship ?

Assume that ; excreta is stored in the spaceship.


THE ANSWER IS THAT THE SPACESHIP MOVES WITH SAME SPEED SINCE IT IS AN ISOLATED SYSTEM .

Ultimately, all of it will be converted into heat energy. And the entire spaceship will heat up.
Now heat energy, doesnt need a medium.
Heat will just radiate from the spaceship, keeping the temperature of the spaceship constant.

Assuming that the initial mass of food available is equal to the final mass of excreta, the mass of intake and excreta, playes no role in this.

SOOO , since the mass of austronauts has decreased, it has to be somewhere in the spaceship itself since the spaceship is an isolated system.

You pose quite am interesting observationistic theorum. I present you with The Dark Matter Trophy!

So we know Dark Matter can not be seen, no light, no see. But what you are forgetting is that planets emit gas, there is gas in different forms, I know eewww. You smelt it you dealt it. Where does it go, how many different forms are there?

So we know Mass is the measure of the quantity of matter thus we can conclude what can not be seen must be dark matter or missing matter. Weight is also dependent on the gravity of what is around. But everyone keeps forgetting about the invisible gas, ions, also many other different things they can not see yet!

Sorry, getting off the dark matter discovery. So some have determined that since planets spin faster than they should there must be mass there, because it can't possible rotate that quick without it. So there must be dark matter present. There are many unseen other things (Classified) present around planets. Do not forget about the gas, Ions, Space Time Continuum, the Prism effect! I think everyone should dismiss Newtonian Law go back to Einstein's theories. You will move much closer if you ditch your own planetary effects.

It is pretty embarrassing that 90% of the universe has not even been found yet. So how can one define and understand dark matter. How can you define something when you can not find it? Not only that, but the theory changes every year.

Y'all are thinking too hard about this. From a former sailor, I can tell you that twice a day we dusted and swept every surface of the ship. Everyday we collected piles of dirt and dust bunnies, despite the fact we had been at sea for weeks away from any external source of dirt or dust. I agree with Parott for I too was in the Navy and we were constantly cleaning and finding...aw what does it really matter( ha a pun). Athar it is this kind of thinking that has brought us great inventions such as smart phones and the games we play on them but there is a down side. If there really is no such thing as Time and everything exists in the now. The dark energy could be the effects we notice of the other dimensions on our current observable universe. That is if you could wrap your head around there not being Time.

I'm still confused on dark matter. Its a baffling topic for me. I know dark matter can be anywhere it just acts differently than matter itself.
This is a documentary I've watched over and over in dark matter and dark energy. Bud still cant wrap my head around it...

You have not provided enough information to answer your original question "then what is the final velocity of the spaceship ?". We would need to know the weight / mass of the space ship. It's path, orbital or non orbital. It's position to account for the gravitational effects of other objects. is there thrust and does it remain constant. At what rate are the consumed calories being burned. At what rate is the heat from the ship dissipating etc....

As for your statements regarding dark matter: Please know that the term dark matter describes the matter that we can not detect / identify in our universe. Basically the difference between the total mass of the universe and the mass of what we can identify within it. You make a lot of assumptions in your statement, not the least of which is that dark matter is a single substance. Assuming everything you state is true, you still have not identified what dark matter is, rather only that there is something you can't identify / detect (dark matter).

Could this be anything to do with flying tanks and carriers that hover over empty lake beds......does Zuperman have the answer hidden away in his basement workshop are we all figments of a Spanish inquisition I mean imagination!?

Thrust is a constantly changing variable in space. To illustrate this lets place your spaceship on a long journey through space using nothing but orbital dynamics to dictate its course and speed. As the spacecraft enters the gravity well of a larger body in space, the pull of gravity provides the "thrust" in a simplified sense thereby accellerating your spaceship. As your spaceship passes the body exerting its pull of gravity this thrust becomes drag slowing the spacecraft. Knowing which phase of flight you are in could help you answer the question. Also, unless your professor actually said to assume that the amount of food ingested by your astronauts is equal to the amount of excrement they produce, i would have to say to remember that excrement would be a gradually increasing variable since the actual amount of excrement created would be a fraction of what was ingested bc the rest is expelled as heat from our bodies.
