Jason,

Most of my fishing holes are coastal rivers and creeks. They're tidal and brackish (heavy on the salt) and usually not more than 6 feet deep. I do the offshore usually only once a year. I love it, but I don't have the boat or money to do it on a regular basis. My boat, the "Knot Workin' ", is living up to her name at the moment. She's a little 14 footer with a 35hp (featured in the catfish pics above). I often go thru very very shallow water (literally inches) in pursuit of bait and to get to some of my spots. She gets me there and can handle me and the family around the river. I'll get something a little bigger and powerful one day that'll take me off the beach, but it won't be "offshore". I save the "for hire" trips for that.

Here's some pics of the canal to the creek where I grew up and the last shot is my mother-in-law's back yard where I fish when I can.

Well I'm back! We had a great time. It was a little rainy and overcast the whole time and got a little but of sneaky sunburn without realizing it. It wasn't our best trip, but parakeet and I ended up with 30lbs of keepers including snapper, Black Sea Bass and Mahi. Beanboy got about 20lbs to take home with a nice Almaco Jack and even brought home one of the many sharks we caught.

What we didn't bring home was the 10lb lobster (estimated weight by one of the mates) I lost at the surface and nice grouper also lost before it got in the boat. It's always the "one" that got away that gets you!

Anyway, here's some pics...

My mahi, black bass and snappers

Parakeet with his catch

And Beanboy's

Parakeets's and mine together at the cleaning station

And a couple shots of other catches from the boat

That is a serious variety. Do you catch'em all using the same tackle/bait or do you switch it up? And how in the world did you land a lobster using a rod? Man I don't catch 1/3rd of that anywhere. I'm in Frankfort, MI, will be going after some salmon this week.

Yep, all rod and reel. Most are caught with a bottom rig, similar to what you would use in the surf only sized up a bit. We use a variety of bait but mostly cut Boston mackerel, squid, whole cigar minnows and cut filets from smaller stuff we catch. The mahi & king mackerel from the "other catches" pics) are caught on the surface using light lines (cigar minnows floating in the current behind the boat).

The lobsters are not uncommon. We usually see one or two caught each trip. They grab the bottom rig baits with their claws and get hooked or tangled in the rest of the line. Here's a pic of one like I lost.

Well it turns out that little man wasn't going to be outdone by his big brother (parakeet) and went fishing off the dock at his Nana's. one red drum and 2 black drum. Not too shabby.

Broiled mahi, homemade French fries and hushpuppies, cucumber & tomatoe salad and fresh summer sweet corn for dinner tonight.... YUMMY!!!

Later this week.... Grilled black sea bass, fried shark bites, grilled squash, more corn (on the grill), maybe a baked tater and we'll see what else.

First of all... Sorry Beanboy.... Again

Just had an awesome dinner. That Parrot dude can cook some mean seafood.

The boys, Beanboy and myself did a little fishing and such this last weekend. Just fired up the oil and made a batch of sheepshead, croaker, sea mullet (whiting), Spanish mackerel, pufferfish and shrimp. Yep we caught all that this weekend. Fixed it up with hushpuppies and home-cut fries with old bay. I'm full as a tick. I'm like a puppy now... Full belly and all I wanna do is take a nap.

In another week or 2 the spot will be running. Can't wait to get the boys out there catching 2 at a time. It's gonna be a blast!

I know its a long shot but if you and the boys can make it over to this side before it cools off, let me know. Maybe you could swing by and grap KA5EY too!!! Not so much of the fishing but we can have a different fun out on the water! "My soul craves being on the water"

Giz... You poor deprived soul. Hushpuppies are a staple anywhere seafood is served in the southeastern US. They're basically a form of cornbread. The dough is made up in a thick soupy concoction then dropped in hot oil. They fry up into dense golden brown goodness. You dip them in butter and eat up. The fact that you've never had one, not to mention not even knowing what they are saddens me. With all seriousness, PM me your mailing address and I'll ship you a bag of mix. You can return the favor with anything but spotted dick.

As a side note, the story goes that they originated as a kind of a dog treat. They are extremely cheap to make and would be fried up and thrown to barking dogs. Hence the name, "hush, puppy".

Since you guys like like fishing just thought i would share.
The cherokee true used to get the bark off a walnut tree ad grind it up. Then sprinkle into the water and it temporarily turns off the fishes nerves causing it to then rise to the surface so you can grab it out of the water. So if you can't get your big Catch then try that.

I often bark up the local walnut tree to numb my nerves so I can float to the surface...

Will post pics later when the numbness wears off

I live in central Kansas so I fish all fresh water. My favorite type of fishing is setting a trout line ( a main line with 300 pounds breaking strength then then 25 individual hooks tied to it and placed just below the waters surface) I set it in the river just before dark then let it sit over night and check it at dawn. I fish for flathead catfish this way which is the biggest fish we have around here. The biggest I have caught was a 55 pounder.

I tried to leave a "thank you", but no button. Hmmmm?

Anyway, love the pic. There's nothing more rewarding than taking a kid fishing. I know if I take my boys fishing that means No fishing for me. I'm tying rigs untangling something, dealing with bait.... There's always something other than actually fishin that I'm going to have to do, but I still love it. Watching them get excited over a catch puts a big ole smile on my face!
