New photo journalists are advised not to make up new names, but to choose from this list, and just add a number if the preferred name is occupied. By keeping the number of different names small, we avoid confusion and ensure that the other players get used to them and learn to respect the press corps as non-combatants.

Mind you, the technique by which you can get these photographic glimpses of the inside of closed buildings should not be discussed outside the circle of Dogfight journalists, - and perhaps a few other dedicated photo journalists.

Although it's difficult in use and often gives quite unpredictable results, it's a powerful tool to manipulate the masses, and should as far as possible be kept between us.

I have read up on the French Escadrille de Lafayette to be sure who Davis was. I shall have to see "Flyboys" again now. He was one of them, and the film doesn't have it all too wrong.

There are papers left after Davis in the New England Aviation Archive too. In a letter which he wrote to his family on June 5th 1917, he says:

"I wanted to get into something where individuality counts and it does in Aviation more than anywhere else. Even if the danger is greater the value of the service is greater too."

He was right about the danger: a third of the Lafayette pilots who served in combat died during the war.

sounds good if i go out to take photo i just join that squad for the time being and then i go back to the 111th when i am done.

The photography medals show the "standard" camera for all serious journalists from before 1930 till after 1970: the Speed Graphic.
The inventive journalism medal has an image of Leonardo da Vinci's "ornithopter" aeroplane.

All three of them will have photo links sent to them in private messages, and the actual png files if requested as e-mail attachments to the adresses they themselves choose.

The photo medal depicts the Speed Graphic which survived tens of years into the SLR (single lens reflex) age thanks to its unequalled capabilities like a 1/2000th sec. shutter speed, laser-spot-like rangefinder system, and the ability to change between half-used film rolls in seconds, and to always be able to continue from the frame where you left it, etc..

All photo-editing programs can do this, like for example Adobe PhotoShop.

But since it's easy to get lost in all the possibilities these tools offer, I'll just explain what you can do with the programs you probably already have.

First of all it depends on what you mean by Black and white (BW).

Pure BW is easy. On a Microsoft Windows computer you can do it with the simple "Paint" utility.

1) Open the colour photo in Paint.
2) Click "save as" and select file type "gif". Save.
3) Click "save as" again, and select file type "monochrome BMP". Save.

Step 2 isn't strictly necessary to make a simple shadow-like BW image, but it improves the result by creating a "raster", which are the small spots that photos in magazines consist of if you look really close.

The photos below show you what results you can expect if you use Paint in this way:

I suspect, however, that what you're after is not line-drawing style BW, but "greyscale".

You can do that with Microsoft Word, which is installed on almost all computers that run a Windows operative system.

1) Open a blank page
2) Choose "insert picture", and insert your colour photo.
3) Click on the photo and select the "picture tools" menu
4) Click on text wrapping and choose "square".
4) To the left in the menu line, click on "modify colours", and choose greyscale.

The present list of journalists who contribute to DOGFIGHT NEWS:

Journalists Spaulding (Gamekeeper) and Jacob10000 have not yet requested DUJ memberships or asked to have issued press cards. Hamers works as an apprentice, and FlyMagic has disappeared, - missing in action, status unknown.

I asked if I would be getting a press card after my first story about the dark pilots but never heard anything more about it.

That's right. I remember now. You are amply qualified as a photo reporter! I'll start the press! Let me know if you want a modified version of your own face in a WW1 cockpit, a cartoon-stile picture or a WW1 pilot, or something else as your ID photo.

Among the "Jacob"s who were fighter pilots during WW1 was Sereno Thorpe Jacob who served in the Lafayette Flying Corps and who had at least two shared victories.

Then there was the German ace Josef Carl Peter Jacobs, aka "The black devil" because he flew a black Fokker triplane with a red and white devil painted on its side. He claimed 48 victories.

He was well liked by everyone, and highly respected by both allies and enemies.

One thing he is known for, is that he stood up against Hermann Göring during WW2 when the Field Marshall told his Luftwaffe pilots that "if the Americans ever decide to join the war you will have little problem shooting them down. They fly no better than penguins". Jacobs responded that "We fought against American volunteers in WW1, and I assure you they were anything but penguins". Göring was outraged about this, but given Jacobs' status as a WW1 ace and war hero, Göring chose not to do anything about this act of verbal insubordination.

The two Jacobses survived the war, but I have found no photo of the American Jacob. The German Jacobs was the last person to be awarded the distinction "Pour le mérite". I suggest we use his picture for your card, - I have one from the start of the war, one that is not very well known, when he was perhaps just 19 years old.

For the id photo we have chosen one of the absolute top aces of WW1: Josef Carl Peter Jacobs, aka 'The Black Devil', who was born in 1894, received his flying licence at the age of 18, and claimed 48 victories before the end of the war. He flew a black painted Fokker triplane that according to him "could out-turn anything the English or the French had, but was a notoriously unstable gun platform that took a lot of practice to handle well".

The Black Devil is the most appropriate symbol we could think of for Jacob10000, who is truly a devil with the camera, and also a crack shot!"
