Ever since Puerto Ricans started to immigrate to the United States during the 50 looking for better opportunity’s and then return to the island we have a well know tradition that happens during those flights. “El aplauso” or the applause; every time a plane lands in the island of Puerto Rico all Puerto Rican passengers spontaneously applause of joy because we are back in our little island. All pilots can hear the clapping in the cockpit and wonder what’s going on. Well it’s a tradition that dates decades and just recently Jet Blue made a little video in appreciation of this Puerto Rico tradition. Enjoy it!

Watching a lot of videos and pictures I never got to see of that terrible sept 20, it was truly horrible. Sad that so many lives were lost and thankful for the blessings the lord gave us too. To all those who gave us a hand we will for ever be grateful and to everyone we lost we will never forget you. Los Boricuas no se quitan we never do y con la ayuda de Dios the island will shine once more.

Captain Rosemary Mariner, United States Navy, Retired, died on January 24, 2019, in the fifth year of her battle with ovarian cancer, with her husband and wingman of 40 years by her side. She was 65. Born in Harlingen, Texas, raised in San Diego, she wanted to be a pilot since she was a child. Her father, an Air Force pilot, died in a plane crash when she was 3 years old. Her family moved to California and she grew up watching the planes at Miramar Naval Air Station. She washed planes and cleaned houses to earn money for flight school.

She graduated from Purdue University with a degree in aeronautics at 19. Captain Mariner was one of the first eight women selected to fly military aircraft in 1973. After flight training in 1974, she became the Navy's first female jet pilot flying the A-4C and the A-7E Corsair II. She moved to the Naval Weapons Center in China Lake, then Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 5. For sea duty, in 1982 she reported aboard USS Lexington, where she qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer.

In 1990, she became the first woman to command a military aviation squadron, VAQ-34, based at the Pacific Missile Test Center at Pt. Mugu, CA. She attended the National War College in Washington, DC, earning a Masters in National Security Strategy, and served on the Staff of the Joint Chiefs in the Pentagon. Her final military assignment was as the Chairman of the Joint Chief's Chair in Military Strategy at the National War College, before retiring in 1997. Throughout her career, Captain Mariner was both willing to serve as a mentor to others and deeply grateful to the men and women who enabled her to pursue her dreams. She was instrumental in the repeal of restrictions on women serving in combat.

In retirement, Captain Mariner was a resident scholar at the Center for the Study of War and Society at the University of Tennessee in the History Department where she taught classes in military history, emphasizing the intersections of war and conscience. She continued to serve as an advisor on national defense policy and women's integration into the military for ABC News, PBS and the Department of the Navy. A voracious reader and an eager academic, she devoted herself to a love of knowledge. In recent years, this included the disease which took her life, which she sought to understand as fully as possible. As expected, she tenaciously fought an implacable foe to the end.

In a 1982 Glamour feature, Mariner said that whether a service member goes into combat should reflect an individual's ability, not gender.
"In modern warfare, the emphasis is not on physical strength, but on brain power operating sophisticated weapons systems," she said. "A machine gun is a great equalizer."

America’s first woman astronaut candidate dead at 88
.
America’s first female astronaut candidate who pushed for women in space but never reached its heights has died, reports said.

Pilot Jerrie Cobb died in Florida on March 18 following a brief illness. She was 88.
News of her death came Thursday from journalist Miles O’Brien, serving as a family spokesman.
In 1961, Cobb became the first woman to pass the grueling astronaut testing. Altogether, 13 women passed the arduous physical testing and became known as the Mercury 13. But NASA already had its Mercury 7 astronauts, all jet test pilots and all military men.
.
None of the Mercury 13 ever reached space, despite Cobb’s testimony in 1962 before a Congressional panel.
“We seek, only, a place in our nation’s space future without discrimination,” she told a special House subcommittee on the selection of astronauts.
The Mercury 13′s story is told in a recent Netflix documentary and a play based on Cobb’s life, “They Promised Her the Moon,” is currently running in San Diego.
Geraldyn Cobb was born on March 5, 1931, in Norman, Oklahoma, the second daughter of a military pilot and his wife. She flew her father’s open cockpit Waco biplane at age 12 and got her private pilot’s license four years later.
Instead of making her an astronaut, NASA tapped her as a consultant to talk up the space program. She was dismissed one week after commenting: “I’m the most unconsulted consultant in any government agency.”
.
She wrote in her 1997 autobiography “Jerrie Cobb, Solo Pilot,” ″My country, my culture, was not ready to allow a woman to fly in space.”
Cobb served for decades as a humanitarian aid pilot in the Amazon jungle.
The Soviet Union ended up putting the first woman into space in 1963: Valentina Tereshkova. NASA didn’t fly a woman in space — Sally Ride — until 1983.
Cobb and other surviving members of the Mercury 13 attended the 1995 shuttle launch of Eileen Collins, NASA’s first female space pilot and later its first female space commander.
Still hopeful, Cobb emerged in 1998 to make another pitch for space as NASA prepared to launch Mercury astronaut John Glenn — the first American to orbit the world — on shuttle Discovery at age 77.
Cobb maintained that the geriatric space study should also include an older woman.
.
“I would give my life to fly in space, I really would,” Cobb told The Associated Press at age 67 in 1998. “It’s hard for me to talk about it, but I would. I would then, and I will now.”
“It just didn’t work out then, and I just hope and pray it will now,” she added.
It didn’t. NASA never flew another elderly person in space, male or female.

In a surprise appearance, Tom Cruise took the stage at Paramount Pictures’ Thursday morning Comic-Con panel to introduce footage from Top Gun: Maverick, his long-awaited follow up to Top Gun.
The first trailer for the movie, which premiered at the panel, offers a little insight into Cruise and Joseph Kosinski’s vision.
“Everything you see in this film is real. We’re working with the Navy. I wanted to give you an experience of being inside that aircraft.”
Top Gun: Maverick, which stars Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Manny Jacinto, and Monica Barbaro, is out on June 26, 2020.
