Since im still trying to work gimp i still use websites to combine pictures or add text
The easiest place is at mybannermaker.com
And you can combine images with gimp or erase the background

Check out mine! I had a freind help me with the letters (how they curve) but I did the rest! Also war hawk does amazing banners! I'm sure he'd teach you the basics

send a PM to Myrlin and ask what he uses. I know its not gimp or my bannermaker. check out the thread in the WolfPack thats his gallery of banners made its pretty cool.

If you can download the app for Art Studio, it's a pretty good tool to use. Can't do animations on it, but gives you just about everything else you need. There is also an online photo editor that is pretty decent, picmonkey.com free to use and also gives you a ton of options.

I use something called picsart. It is almost the same thing as a mobile version of photoshop. I use it for all my banners. Both that i have i actually made with picsart. My NLR banner is my newest creation

Picsart is a great app! Actually just dowloaded it a couple days ago. The layering tools work great. Wish it offered a few more fonts in the text mode though. But, that is easily fixed by using multiple apps.

Yep, I use other apps, but every once in a blue moon, I buy a sec of fonts that I really like

I heard blue moons are common over at NLR
