I had almost forgotten that game. Which brings up a question, unrelated to this but before I just let it pass. Last night while playing a 2 on 1 (I was the 1) after dropping my payload on the red base as I looped back around I saw a red on the runway so & I knew he saw me, so I flew low over the base (no shots fired) and as I climbed I simply told him "Get airborne, I'll be waiting" & headed for home, Took a minute before he did, probably thought I was not being honest but he finally did then I get accused of camping by the second red, I did turn around but not until I was fired upon first. But my question is this....What is the difference between camping and spawn killing? All spawn killers are campers, but not all campers are spawn killers. Right? And does anyone object to my starting another thread here devoted to a question of the week which I post and anyone can reply to? All ? will be DF related and I would be open to suggestions, some might not even be answerable but put out there to make you stop and think. What say you my brothers (and sisters) wolves.Aououoooowwww
Let me see if I can help you out here Larry.
Spawnkilling is when you shoot the reds on the runway prior to any chance of them getting airborne. It is a huge no-no while posted up in a tank, shelling reds as they spawn into the game. In an aircraft spawnkilling is accomplished by camping around the enemy base and as soon as the reds begin to taxi, blasting them with no chance of defending themselves... then sticking around to do it again. Camping then is the act of hanging around the red base, waiting for a chance to shoot reds when they are at their most vulnerable. Camping is generally frowned upon when there are no incoming blue bombers which need cover, the camper has traveled without a bomb to the enemy base for the sole purpose of killing reds when they are at their most vulnerable, and the camping does not serve to end the game or accomplish the objective, only to record kills for the camper.
Having said all that I would argue that camping can serve a tactical purpose. If you have delivered your bombs and other blues are inbound they may require cover to be successful. Cover can be in the form of suppressing fire (Gonna look just like spawnkilling if done while the reds are spawning in) or cover can be in the form of putting on an air show for the red maintenance personnel on the ground as you twist and turn over the red base, adding a pipper to the red guys screen for confusion.
Based on your account what you did was fine. You turned for home, and the red became airborne and engaged you. Nothing wrong with turning around and giving him some wolf love! From a tactical standpoint what I like to do is make the red chase me some, dodging his bullets. That gives me time to see if he has dropped his bombs to chase me or not, plus if I get him far enough away from his base by the time I turn and engage, he may decide to tank up. Tanks mid field are not a target so what you have done is effectively eliminate one opponent, at least temporarily.
That is how I see the terms camping and spawnkilling. Others may have different opinions, which I would like to hear.
I think a question of the week type thread will be good. It can be open to any question and you will get answers from all our senior officers and brand new guys. Like an open forum type thing. Sounds like a plan, Larry.
