Flying isn't the only fun to be had in DF Elite. There is a whole other part of the game once you get out of the plane.

* The other day in a capture-the-flag game, the red flag had been dropped into the dense woods inside enemy territory, there was no way to pick it up while airborne. The reds were covering their flag while blues were trying to drive tanks in to retrieve it. I managed to land in a nearby clearing, jumped out of the cockpit and headed through the forest on foot. The Blue tanks had been destroyed and there was nothing but red dots on the radar. Reds were mowing the woods with machine guns, I was doing my best to hide behind trees, (does that even work?) inching closer to the flag, then blue fighters arrived.... cover! I went for the flag. A red parachute had just landed nearby and he got in his tank. I snatched the flag and ran past him before he could line up a shot, knowing how hard it can be to turn the turret and drive in the woods. I hear tank shells explode around me as I run pell-mell between the trees trying to make it back to my parked plane! I hear the rat-tat-tat of machine guns as bullets fall around me like hail. There's a BOOM! and gloriously the text says the enemy tank was destroyed by a friendly! Still running, I look ahead and see a red plane dropping bombs on my Seimens Schukert, ha! Apparently it's indestructible while I'm out of the cockpit. Another red and a blue have got into tanks nearby and are having a shoot-out with each other. Somehow I make it to my plane, hit the throttle and get airborne... twisting and turning my way out of a swarm of turnfighters... my team proved to be the better and I was left unmolested for a relaxing flight home.
:woohoo:

I understand the nostalgia some have for DF1 but I really like Elite. Thanks Joaquin!

Hola Fate!
As always very entreating and well written story. It sure sounds like it was one epic fun game. Your description of what happened is so vivid that I imagine you running thru the field just like this!!!

i have tried to bring the flag back to base on foot. i first tried it without any hope of success, throwing caution to the wind to just have fun with it. if you are careful being on foot is surprisingly survivable, and reds don't quite know what to do with it. it's fun watching them try to come in to bomb only to crash, using cover makes their strafing runs ineffective, even running around buildings frustrates the hell out of the opposition, while i'm giggling away.

making it all the way across the map, though - i think i did it once, with assistance from friendly forces. it's still really fun to try, if you get the chance and aren't afraid of getting blasted.
