Hey DF enthusiasts, today (March 16) is International Women's Day.

For almost 50 years, in most developed countries, gender equality has been legislated and formalised through opportunity and education, but women are still woefully under represented in management and leadership roles. Across the workforce, women are still paid less than men. Discrimination still exists because true cultural transformation has not yet occurred. It's not enough to sit back and allow legislation to fix the problem. If you're an employer or manager, act now to change good intentions into positive outcomes.

Visit www.internationalwomensday.com to find out more and make your own pledge for parity.

Why is there a women's day? Why is there a mens day? Is there a black history month in all countries of the world? Why don't we all celebrate a human day/month? What about all the other species that inhabit this earth? Why not call all days earth day, we all live here, and we all have this place to be thankful for. This is a game that we have the privilege to play, so why isn't everyday dogfight day?

In Honor of Internationals Women’s Day

Lori Piestewa

Specialist Lori Ann Piestewa (December 14, 1979 – March 23, 2003) was a U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps soldier killed during the same Iraqi Army attack in which fellow soldiers Shoshana Johnson and Jessica Lynch sustained injuries. A member of the Hopi tribe, Piestewa was the first Native American woman in history to die in combat while serving with the U.S. military and the first woman in the U.S. armed forces killed in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Arizona's Piestewa Peak is named in her honor.

Piestewa was a member of the US Army's 507th Maintenance Company, a support unit of maintenance and repair personnel. Her company was traveling in a convoy through the desert and was meant to bypass Nasiriyah, in southern Iraq, during the opening days of the war; but the convoy got lost and ran into an ambush in Nasiriyah on March 23, 2003.

As Piestewa came under "a torrent of fire" (in the words of an Army investigation of the battle) she drove at high speed, evading enemy fire until a rocket-propelled grenade hit her Humvee. The explosion sent her vehicle into the rear of a disabled tractor-trailer. Piestewa, Johnson, and Lynch all survived the crash with injuries, while three other soldiers in the Humvee died. They were taken prisoner along with four others, with Piestewa dying of her wounds soon after. A video of some of the American prisoners of war, including Piestewa (filmed shortly before she died in an Iraqi hospital).

Piestewa was awarded the Purple Heart and Prisoner of War Medal. The US Army posthumously promoted her from Private First Class to Specialist.

Jessica Lynch has repeatedly said that Piestewa is the true hero of the ambush and named her daughter Dakota Ann in honor of her fallen comrade. Her death led to a rare joint prayer gathering between members of the Hopi and Navajo tribes, which have had a centuries-old rivalry.

In Honor of Internationals Women’s Day

Bessie Coleman

In 1922, aviator Bessie Coleman became the first African American woman to stage a public flight
in America. She was the first black woman to earn a pilot's license. Because flying schools in the United States denied her entry, she taught herself French and moved to France, earning her license from France's well-known Caudron Brother's School of Aviation in just seven months.

She learned to fly in a Nieuport Type 82 biplane, with "a steering system that consisted of a vertical stick the thickness of a baseball bat in front of the pilot and a rudder bar under the pilot's feet." On June 15, 1921, Coleman became the first woman of African American and Native American descent to earn an aviation pilot's license, and the first person of African American and Native American descent to earn an international aviation license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.

Coleman specialized in stunt flying and parachuting, earning a living barnstorming and performing aerial tricks.
On April 30, 1926, Coleman was in Jacksonville, Florida. She had recently purchased a Curtiss JN-4 (Jenny) in Dallas. Her mechanic and publicity agent, 24-year-old William D. Wills, flew the plane from Dallas in preparation for an airshow but had to make three forced landings along the way due to the plane's being so poorly maintained and worn out. Upon learning this, Coleman's friends and family did not consider the aircraft safe and implored her not to fly it. On take-off, Wills was flying the plane with Coleman in the other seat. She had not put on her seatbelt because she was planning a parachute jump for the next day and wanted to look over the cockpit sill to examine the terrain. About ten minutes into the flight, the plane unexpectedly went into a dive, then spun around. Coleman was thrown from the plane at 2,000 ft (610 m) and died instantly when she hit the ground. William Wills was unable to regain control of the plane and it plummeted to the ground. Wills died upon impact and the plane burst into flames. Although the wreckage of the plane was badly burned, it was later discovered that a wrench used to service the engine had slid into the gearbox and jammed it. Bessie was 34 years old

Coleman remains a pioneer of women in the field of aviation.

Against all odds

This short film is about a young South African woman, Siba Gqirana, who is training to become a pilot thanks to the Western Union’s overarching Chain of Betters program. Even in 2016 only 5% of pilots around the world are women. Learn more about Siba and her family in the video below.

I am for equality when there is true equality.
I am for Equal work for equal pay regardless of gender
I am for reward and recognition for a job well done, commitment and loyalty to the organization irrespective of gender.
I am not for treating everyone the same mostly because they are not all the same.
I am not for treating males better or worse than their female counterpart because of gender.
I am not for treating females better or worse than their male counterparts because of gender.
I am not necessarily for legislated or mandated treatment just because of gender, male or female.

Sarla Thakral

She was the first Indian woman to fly an aircraft. Born in 1914, she earned an aviation pilot license in 1936 at the age of 21 and flew a Gypsy Moth solo. She had a four-year-old daughter.

She was the first Indian to get airmail pilot's license and flew between Karachi and Lahore and also first woman pilot to obtain 'A’ license when she accumulated over 1000 hours of flying.

While she was working towards the commercial pilot license in 1939, World War II broke out and civil training was suspended. Later her husband died in a crash. She abandoned her plans to become a commercial pilot, returned to Lahore and joined the Mayo School of Art where she trained in the Bengal school of painting and obtained a diploma in fine arts. She was also a dedicated follower of the Arya Samaj.

Sarla, also known as Mati, became a successful businesswoman, painter and began designing clothes and costume jewellery. She died in 2009.

For the past several months, I've been living in a Navy barracks complex called "Jaenke Hall", named after Navy Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Jaime Jaenke, who was killed in Iraq in 2006. The entire building is dedicated to her and what she fought for, and she is an inspiration to all of the sailors who live in this hall. Along with our brother barracks, "Fralish Hall", the complex reminds us of the sacrifices of those who came before us.

I know I'm late, but I want to recognize all the women who have chosen to stand alongside their male counterparts and break barriers, to serve their country and, if needed, to give the ultimate sacrifice.
