I decided that being able to fly and manoeuvre while looking backwards at the guy on my tail trying to get into firing position would be a cool skill, so during my train commute when my tablet is off line, I've been trying to fly looking backwards in the training games. Its even harder than you might think!!!
But you do get better at it.

So here's the challenge. First one to manage to fly the entire 2nd training game looking backwards, and land at the other base is to post their claim to fame here.

Any takers?

McFate, please don't ruin my day by saying you've already done it!!

The second time I shot Zup in a game. he made my plane fly backwards for a month. So I'm pretty sure I could, and have done this. Just a heads up, DON'T SHOOT ZUP.

ALL IN 100%

Lol,

That seems like a heck of a challenge! :S

I'm flattered that you singled me out here.

I do spend a lot of time working on personal challenges I.e. combat in outside view or inverted, but flying while looking behind or sideways for more than just a few moments at a time is very tough! I often try to keep track of reds as they chase me around the bridge but it is very hard to keep from crashing.

I should check to see if I have the record for crashes yet.

I'll give it a try! :woohoo:

Cheers Gannet!

When I first started playing Big TeX gave me a good tip that is near to along these lines. There is no point to looking in front of your plane if the person your fighting with isn't there. When I get in a dogfight with someone I'll keep scanning around at their plane. Sometimes when you see them make a move you can head them off.

Now flying the whole time while looking back? That's different. My device won't let me do it. After looking somewhere for about 30 seconds my device will drop back to normal forward view for some reason.

I'm not there yet. Correcting to hold a straight line ok most of the time, but landing....that's going to be the big one!

Guys I've got a heads start, so here's some tips:
The slower training exercise planes are easier
Reducing sensitivity the first few times gives you some chance of correcting your natural reactions
I drag across my screen (and hold) to flip round horizontally, not vertically which would give upside down view backwards...seems more natural
On a tablet you need to drag across the screen after you push the throttle up. Not sure about other devices.

Yeah, I thought this one would be right up your alley McFate. :)
Looks like you might be beaten by the Jolly Green Giant though.....

Oof.

I can get across the map okay but landing?

Eh, not so good. :pinch:

The most difficult part of flying (while look behind) is just trying to keep the view straight. I find it's easier to drag the view upside down instead of around the side. Maybe my dyslexia makes it easier to fly with an inverted view? :S

Lol.

A more useful trick that I've worked on in the past is trying to do a "bounce landing" where you come in (fairly fast) and flip around 180 degrees before you hit the brakes or take off again in the opposite direction. I actually managed it intentionally in a few btc games and even a couple of times on the lower deck in a ctc. The problem is that different updates seem to make slight differences in the way you "bounce" so my success record for intentionally pulling off this trick is pretty dismal.

fate, ive mastered that pretty good (i even plled out of a turnfight with wig and landed on the carrier while hit without dying using this) its rather flashy and useful....if you see me you can ask for some pointers

The best is when you manage to do it and shoot (while bouncing) the red who is following you. B)
I've only managed that once. I wonder who was more supprised. Me or the red? Lol!

I've learned where to start my thumb drag so that my left hand ends up in a natural grip on the tablet. That anchors the view. Hopefully it will become an automatic action in combat manoeuvres ( which look a long way off at the moment! ).

Easier if you get the view exactly backwards as you are leaving the runway.

Can someone translate Baron? I'm linguistically challenged.. Is he saying he's done it already?

I haven't attempted the landing yet either. Maybe go over there and practise a few normal takeoffs first, so you get landmarks for backwards landings????

You mean you turn in the air after the bounce?

Yea. As long as the Brake button is not on the screen you can shoot. This also means that you can shoot if you have landed upside down. :silly: I've managed to shoot incoming reds while upside down on the lower deck of the carrier.

There was a post on the blacklist once because someone had flipped on the runway and was spawn killing point blank!

That's a cool tip about being able to shoot crashed upside down, sometimes you can scoot around by reving up, which means aiming is possible.

I have now managed a backwards landing on flat land soon after takeoff, so it is possible.

But to kill the throttle on a touch screen you need to release the rear view for a second or so, so completing the challenge completely honestly is not possible.
