I guess I don't read the forum thoroughly enough to see the thread on the new release. I updated the game (Android phone) because it forced me to update when I tried to play. In the new update, if I quit out of a game (I can't stand capture carrier), the server icons then had count-down timers on them. I assume that it's possible to wait until the timers are zero and then you can pick a server and play, but I never got that far, and clicked on one of the timers and found the option to PAY MA MONEY (again) (which I have no problem with). It took a few minutes, but after I paid my money, it appears that I can continue playing, quit, do whatever, and I don't have to wait.
Zup knows better than anyone whether this will actually reduce the frequency of free players enough and improve server lagginess. At best, a free player who previously played game after game after game will now have to wait in between quits... but I'm not sure if Zup's implementation makes them wait in between *games*. If it does make them wait, this might work.
However, playing a few games just now, there's still significant lag. This should have limited Android players immediately. So the continued lag could be explained by: (a) lots of these players opted to pay the monthly fee and most of them are still playing a ton, (b) Android players weren't a significant enough part of the player population and we need this to get to Apple before seeing lag improve, (c) there are just too many darned people playing versus the server capability, and even making free players wait 7 minutes isn't helping, or (d) maybe the players are just being made to wait in between Quit-outs, and they are still allowed to play consecutive games.

At the moment, only Android players are paying for the servers. I am on Windows 8.1, so I haven't got the update yet. If all players on all platforms had got the update at the same time, then it would definitely reduce the lag. As it stands, you have premium players and non updated players on all of the servers, so lag is still a problem.
I asked zup when the updates for other platforms would be available. He said this is out of his hands, as the updates for all platforms had already been sent out, it depends on how long the different stores take to put them up.
The more players who pay, the more money is available to rent more server time, so therefore the lag will be greatly reduced, over time. People can still play for free once all of the updates are available, but they will have to wait for the free games every 5 or 6 minutes. These games will be on slower, low cost servers, so they will get more lag. The premium (paid for) players will soon benefit from faster servers and will not have to wait between games, but before they can be properly implemented, zup has to see how much revenue is coming in to pay for them. The more cash we pay, the more servers can be put in place, therefore a major reduction in lag is seen by the premium players.
As is usually the way of the world, only time will tell whether the revenue will cover the cost of faster servers and more of them.
I have also seen many people whinging about having to pay to play. Excuse my French, but I hope they can pull their heads out of their arses and realise that the game they know and love costs money to remain online. When all is said and done, I couldn't care less if zup makes millions from this game from all of us paying to play, as long as the game and the community survive! If zup does make millions and retires on his own remote island somewhere near the equator, fair play to zup! I would gladly pay more than double what he is currently asking to keep playing and I still have the option to pay nothing!
