So, I mounted my device where I can monitor World Chat for entertainment.
Therefore, I have observed WC for many continuous hours.

We have a couple of special kids/adults that visit with us.
I have seen comments referring to them as retarded, trolls and such.
Think about it....
Your son, brother, or friend just needs validation and friendship. Would you respond that way to them?

Words of encouragement, direction and GENTLE words of reprimand will work more MAGIC than put-downs.

It's not the same day and age PAUL as when you and I were young. I don't ever remember cussing and if I did I would have had my head knocked off. Now it's a part of our English laungage. I don't even mind crude humor as long as it's not hurting people.

Will someone please explain to me what fun it is to cuss and put people down that you don't even know?

Well, Paul and Davy both have a point. I do work in our church youth ministry and times is changed i will admit. Many youths today don't have the family atmosphere in which we grew up...family structure and dynamics have changed considerably. There are many many more broken homes today...many absent fathers. Sadly, youths have to learn from others..and feel the need for acceptance often reaching and settling for what they can get. Today, a couple can practically get a drive thru divorce. Lots of broken homes. I find youths often engage in activities we may see as odd, strange, or retarded all because they want to be accepted. Those types of behaviors can include things like coloring hair pink and purple, drug alcohol abuse, bullying and putting down others; the latter is significant because it is a false sense of a boost in esteem. It's tough for us to not judge when we see that behavior...and at times, even tougher when we try to take the young people under our wing...just my two cents. One of the best threads Paul...kudos

As the parent of a special needs child, the word retarded, retard,'tard, and other expressions such as "must be the short bus" used in this game and elsewhere make me cringe. I make it a point to correct these comments at every opportunity. Having spent more than 20 years in public education as a guidance director, I can tell you it was a daily crusade to correct the youth of our schools when these terms were used. The most common response was "I didn't mean anything by it." My response was, "Then don't say it!" Chat, emails, and texts give us no idea of the real feelings behind a person's words. It is much easier to write things on your computer, phone, or tablet without thinking of the consequence of your words. Paul your words are golden. We just need to think before we type something about someone we don't really know. Respect, responsibility and kindness are needed everywhere, everyday! Thank you for reminding us of that.

I have rewrote a reply to this thread 3 times so far,because nothing seemed adequate but here goes.I also had two uncles severely retarded.My grandmother taught me how fortunate I was to be born "normal"so I also feel the cringe you spoke of RT.Everyone that has posted in this thread so far has touched my heart...thanks to all of you and mostly to you fly.great words my friend.

hello Paul you have a good point and it would be nice to see the less vulgarity on the world chat but unfortunately enless momma and daddy are watching these kids rattle off like they have no limits it's like they've heard the word for the first time and they want to use it at every opportunity till they figure out its true meaning I agree we could be more gentle with one another in the world chat especially when you see someone struggling to keep up with conversation or to converse in general they most likely will be a special needs status I generally stay away from world chat unless I see my name being taken in vain then I will reply I generally try to encourage especially people I do not know are not familiar with.
