Ok boys and girls, settle in for a little history lesson...

The bell bottoms, as with some many things in the Navy, are largely to honor tradition nowadays. The flared legs of Navy uniforms were originally designed that way to make removal of the trousers easier after ending up overboard. Sailors could remove their britches, tie the engs of the legs together and fill them with air to be used as a flotation device. Bell bottoms save lives!
