I am a level 26 head to head merchant so if a turner gets past me I have little chance. I thought it might be useful to hear from the other side as it were. I'm no expert but I can hold my own now. I find that the success rate of tactics you describe here depends on the opponent to some extent. I am getting better at catching your type on the turn so I might not be the easiest person to take on like this. If people are turning at me they are not firing at me much so if I can anticipate moves I have a chance, especially at that sweet moment as they are passing me exposing their undercarriage

. Turners are still harder to hit than most head to head folks though. Only as a last resort will I turn (slightly surprised I am still alive

) and take them on because it is like a turkey shoot for the dogfighters, especially when I am in my Spad!! If I have blues behind me I prefer to evade off the line than take the red on so a friendly has a shot at them while they are focusing on my waggling tail.
I think the fully rounded pilot can do turning or straight methods well and apply them to the weaknesses of the opponent, their position on the field and to the mission.
I agree with [e]Hammer_tool about taking these situations on, observation and practice. I never leave a game just because it is not a bombing mission.
Of course a good staying alive strategy is sneaking but it is in conflict with keeping friends strategies
