I respect what you're saying, Wumper, and even sympathize and agree with some.
I do believe that lag switches have been and are being used, by a growing number of players. But the assumption that every player that oags when you start to shoot at him is switching is incorrect, as is the idea that the game is dying.
When i enter a game, if I'm going to lag, it takes about 15-20 seconds to make itself apparent, about the time it takes to sight an enemy pilot. THE MORE PILOTS AROUND, THE WORSE THE LAG. That is key. When four reds pop into sight, I'm more likely to lag than when one.
A bout of lag usually lasts me 30 seconds to a minute at the worst, after which either everything will move in fast motion, i will die multiple times, and i will get credit for bombing or about half of the kills i actually earned, OR i will disconnect. Either way, it's annoying as purgatory. So if it seems that some players only lag when you shoot at them, that is precisely correct. Except it's unintentional.
As for the game dying, little could be further from the truth. A few weeks ago, we gained 100,000 people in 24 hours. Even if only one in five people play, that's still over 20,000. If we do not have 150 MORAFs yet, we are very close. For every troll, cheater, and fool, there is a pulot with a morale and a gun of gold. Even when the in-game activity slows, the forum is bustling. In the last month, I've seen the avaerage number of members on forum at any time go from 12-16 to 30-35.
When Squad Wars comes, we'll only continue to grow, and perhaps the majority of laggers will be weeded out then. Just kidding, squad wars is coming when Elvis and Santa perform on the moon.
This game is changing, absolutely. And sometimes, not for the better, but that can't be helped. But this game is far from ruined. Until then, let's buckle down and shoot some reds!
Salutes all around
