Ok. There I was rooting around in the cabinet looking for something to munch. And low and behold there it was. A CAN OF SPAM. I opened it cooked some with eggs. As I ate it I wondered. Just what the HELL is spam made from?

The Hormel website implies that it will never go bad, but that its taste will deteriorate after the "Best By" date from the fresh tasting wonder you enjoyed to...well...I'm not sure that it will deteriorate from its current taste, or that such a thing is possible. Spam plus brown sugar and canned pineapple equals Hawaii night at the bunker.

I always heard it was Spiced (SP) ham (AM) and as far as I also heard it made from the same as the Pennsylvanian Dutch call scrapple. From what I am told once you take all the good cuts of meat from the pig away all the left over whatever, so long as its protein of any kind is ground up and used. The difference between the 2 is spam is pressed into the can and scrapple is loose. as for it not going bad, I'm sure it does and many canned food and jarred foods can claim the distinction of super shelf life that aren't horrible at all if there is no bacteria and no way for it to get in what's going to make it go bad?

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canning

I first learned about Spam when I was living in Hawaii...

The residents of the state of Hawaii consume the most Spam per capita in the United States. Hawaiian Burger King restaurants began serving Spam in 2007 to compete with the local McDonald's chains. In Hawaii, Spam is so popular it is sometimes referred to as "The Hawaiian Steak" [taken from Wikipedia]

What I want to know is what the heck are grits?

Grits refers to a ground-corn food of Native American origin, that is common in the Southern United States and eaten mainly at breakfast. Modern grits are commonly made of alkali-treated corn known as hominy. Wikipedia

Spam shelf life

I'm a bit of an expert when it comes to spam, having been in a scout troop for 8 years...weve had spam in our trailer for years...hasn't spoiled and the scouts still think it tastes fine well after its sell by/best by date. As for whats in it...ill have to find the picture...but its a good one...
