What these guys did was really incredible. The entire generation, whether those at home building war machines or off at war, accomplished phenomenal feats. We've come from the very definition of sacrifice & service to country to a nation where many expect handouts with nothing given in return. Not all things were better back then, but what a time it would've been to live through.
Incidentally, the best part of Band of Brothers was the interviews with the vets themselves. We'll always have history books, but we'll miss out on the individual stories & details. It's actually hard to watch a guy that you know was tougher than titanium nails break down while recalling stories of a buddy who didn't come home. Pretty sad stuff.
My dad was Army infantry in Europe in WWII, which is a big reason he pushed me to a career in the Air Force & not the Army.
RIP Wild Bill...
Fewer and fewer of these guys left every year. I drove a member of the 101st to his doctor appts for a couple of months. His name was Dennis Casteel, and he was in the weapons company. Most folks don't realize that not all the 101st parachuted into normandy on June 6th. The weapons company had the crew served machine guns and mortars, and they could not jump with those. They went into Normandy and later holland in gliders! He was lucky to have survived one glider landing, let alone two. It was an honor and a privilege to get to drive him back and forth and talk with him. The trips were too few and far between.
