I am not even going to try and defend the premise of the show as intelligent. Of course the zombie plot is ridiculously stupid. But the show is much more than the zombies. The Walking Dead absolutely delivers where network garbage shows like Revolution completely fail.

Consider the show from this perspective. Global society catastrophically devolves in a matter of weeks or months. Billions of people are dead. The philosophical foundations of society are untenable. We exist in an intelligent but utterly primal state. The essence of life becomes mere survival which is utterly immoral and brutal at times. The higher thinking struggle of re-establishing "civilization" continues to be an incredibly dangerous distraction from Maslow's hierarchy of food, shelter, security. All three of these remain inconsistent preventing a higher social evolution. In this perspective, the Walking Dead is brilliant, relevant, and very captivating.
