I was introduced to spam as a child and still have horrific memories, that key that had to be pried from the side of the spam can. Inserting the tab into the key just removed from the side of the spam can and the first turn of the key with the tab inside the eyelet.

My god man, the smell that came from that first separation of the tin, not to mention the clear spam jelly that excreted from the tin can.

Once it was exposed and splayed on a saucer dish, butter knife swiping away the thick layer of gelatin preserve(mmmmmm) and a quick slice to place on your bleached white wonder bread with a slick thick layer of mayonnaise.

Someone kill the spam, don't let them put it in a pan, dear god not the pan. I say let them Spamkill.

Dear God, your graphic and most precise account had me practically tasting and smelling that congealed slime of spam. I only gagged once as my mind wandered back to a better time and place, tainted only by that horrific memory of spam. That swipe of the butter knife never got ALL the jelly did it? There was always some remaining to coat your tongue, your throat, your very soul.

I agree with every wince, every grimace, every traumatic memory.

Kill the spam. I would not eat it from a can, I would not heat it in a pan. I would not taste it on a train, I would not take it in my plane. I will not touch this yucky spam, I would not, could not, Sam I Am.

What else do you stock your end of the world bunker with? If it comes down to eating the charred, maggoty rotting flesh of other humans killed in the apocalypse, or SPAM, that SPAM is gonna look pretty tasty.

A friend of mine has a spam collection.

Cans from every decade, most countries, many holidays. Kosher spam.("Breef") Different types of meat, if you can call it meat. I think she even has a low fat, low salt version....nah, couldn't be.

The only type I think she does not have is free-range, grass-fed, organic, vegan spam. :P

I wonder if there is much of any value to her collection or if it is only piece of mind for possible supply disasters.

What is the shelf life of spam?

SLIVER

Longrifle - you sooooo have a point there.
McFate - the shelf life is about 75 years provided the layer of slime is intact.

Hormel even admits that SPAM will outlast the roaches on its website:

"The product is always safe to consume as long as the seal has remained intact, unbroken and securely attached. However, the flavor and freshness of the product gradually begin to decline after three years from the manufacturing date."

Flavor decline? Don't you believe it; it's still as strange on the 5th anniversary as it was jsut off the grocer's shelf.

"Always" :dry: :huh: :sick:
Maybe it is better expressed as "half-life" instead of shelf life.

In light of this conversation, what comes to mind when you hear the term "spam filter" ? :S

I do a lot of bush walking with my teenage boys. We live close to the Australian Blue Mountains which provide some wonderful recreational walking and climbing. 2 or 3 days out there with no phone coverage can be a wonderful experience in this digital age. What do we carry with us in addition to the usual camping and survival gear? Of course we carry noodles or pasta, dried fruit and nuts, perhaps some beef jerky or freeze dried veggies, but we always carry Spam and powdered egg - the breakfast of kings.
Outback Survival Recipe: Spam Omelette Wraps
Ingredients:
1 can of spam
100g powdered egg
1 pkt tortilla wraps
Cooking time: 12-15 mins
1. Dice one can of spam in a small pan over a high heat. No need for oil, as the Spam releases plenty of its own. mmmmm
2. Fry until all dices are golden brown on all sides. This is not essential. If you don't have enough gas it's ok just to warm the meat through. However, if the knife you used to dice the spam was previously picking shit from the soles of your boots, suggest you cook thoroughly.
3. Meanwhile, add half a cup of water to 100g powdered egg. I prefer to add 100g of powdered egg to half a cup of water, but it's a free country. Mix the water and eggs until it has acquired a disgusting slimy consistency that must be seen to be believed.
4. Spread the spam dices evenly in the pan and pour over the egg mix. Allow to cook through for 10 minutes or so. If you're feeling adventurous you can add some wild herbs or mushrooms that you may have collected from around the camp site (at this point you should check for phone coverage so you can call for help when their deadly toxins begin to take effect). Don't go for restaurant style 'a bit runny' eggs. Cook through until firm. I prefer a cardboard consistency, but it's up to you.
5. When done, divide the omelette evenly and serve in tortilla wraps with lots of pepper or Tabasco sauce. Wash down with a big mug of tea or coffee.
6. Pack up the campsite, replenish water bottles, check map, walk in the wrong direction for four hours wishing you were at home on the couch with football, beer and iPad.
Enjoy

Swop, the Korean stuff looks great. Not sure about the Hawaiian plate. It doesn't look like the traditional Polynesian fare I imagined.

Well the history of the Hawaiian Plate Lunch goes back to the days when the American Soldiers had bases of soldiers....they would use fried Spam as part of the meal in addition to the banana leaves stuffed with pork, rice, fried eggs and many other times (the ones I like) have the additional Korean meat (either beef ribs-Galbi or Korean stripped beef-Bulgogi).....

Ronnie....there are traditional Hawaiian dishes which are part of the Luau but Hawaiian Plate Lunches are not "Luau" but what locals eat everyday.....Polynesian dishes or "Luau" that you are used to Ronnie are what Hawaiian's eat on special occasions....the Hawaiian Plate Lunch I showed you is the one that is the most popular in Hawaii today.

Ronnie I hope this helps. :)

Eric, you have opened a can of worms with this thread mate. As a contribution, a popular use for Spam is as a substitute for bacon in fried rice.

Yes a can has been opened and I can hear that squisyy sound the block makes upon exiting the can. I have eaten so much of it in my youth I can't stand it anymore. I have tried many ways to cook it and it still leaves that familiar salty taste on ones pallet.

I guess by burying it in spice would help, would eat it if it were the only food available, however we haven't reached that point thankfully. So if I see a can of spam on the tarmac, I will spam kill it. Ban me if you must, but I will take no shame as a spam killer.

I have to confirm, I had spam when I was in Hawaii a couple years ago. And it wasn't on the menu just for the tourists - it seems that there is a rather high consumption per capita in Hawaii.

It was delicious. Yes, I paid good money plus the restaurant mark-up plus tip, for canned food. It was grilled *just right*. If memory serves, it was on top of ramen.

One more offering that might offend Philadelphia residents, but it's great in a pinch if you are out of thinly sliced steak. Philly Cheese-Spam with grilled onions and peppers, on a butter-grilled italian roll. Don't knock it til you try it.

In Japan Spam is a delicacy! I used to go there often, one time the local sales guys gave me something and asked me what I thought. I said tastes like spam. they were womanized that I knew spam. it's served in restaurants in Japan.

personally I like camp pie better (Tom Piper was the brand I used to eat way back in the 80's, not sure they still make it cannedmeatmagic.tumblr.com/post/18270084...asty-tom-piper-twins)
