I was in the car with my family driving home after going out to eat. We were passing by a lake and saw about 6-8 lights in the sky and some were red. They were not flashing and when we saw them they started going out. Once we pulled over to get a good picture all of them were out. They were not moving at all and when we first sighted them they were in a formation that looked like the little dipper. Anybody have an explanation? Couldn't have been hovering helicopters because it was silent and it couldn't have been flares because they were in a formation that was too organized and were still. Please give an explanation for this but sorry I couldn't get a picture. I did see a similar report of some red lights over a lake in a different state though. This happened in NC by the way. You can just search "red lights in the sky" on Google and it should be pretty easy to find a similar picture. Please also tell if you have seen anything similar.

Most of the time those are just optical illusions caused by line of sight and distance. Could also be military exercises. If it was the latter, (not sure how far away you were) it could have been helicopters. Some of the spec ops choppers are pretty quiet. Other possibilities are atmospheric phenomena such as st. Elmo's fire, red flashlights on hillsides, things of that nature. When i did seismic drilling we used high power flashlights and shined them at our choppers cockpits so the pilots could find us through the forest canopy. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that's what you saw. People in rural Pennsylvania kept thinking we were little green men at dusk when they saw us signaling the chopper lol.
