Great thread. Thank you Kes.
I hope you don't mind me sharing a bit of family history. Madtothebone's grandfather reminded me of my uncle Ronaldo (Ronnie) Sheward, who was an inspiration to me. He was one of many Argentinians who joined the RAF to fight the Nazis in WW2. So many joined that 164 Argentine-British squadron was formed. Its motto was Firmes Volamos (Determined We Fly) and its unique insignia was a British lion backed by the rising sun of Argentina.
Some pilots adorned the side of their aircraft with the popular Argentine cartoon character Patoruzu, an indigenous Indian with incredible strength - arguably the world's first cartoon super hero.
The squadron was first equipped with Supermarine Spitfires. Here's a group photo taken in 1942 in front of one of their birds. Ronnie is third from the right sporting a fine Supermario style moustache (is he the moustache man? lol)
Later they were equipped with Hawker Hurricanes tasked with intercepting V1 rockets, which Ronnie described as 'mierda en los pantalones' flying. They later made their name in the ground attack role riding rocket armed Typhoons. The squadron fought throughout the battle for Normandy and beyond into Belgium and Holland providing close air support and anti armour missions for the British and US Army divisions. 164 Squadron took many casualties, but they were deadly. During the German counter attacks around Falaise (the battle of the bulge) he flew eighty sorties in ten days against the German panzers. His bird was shredded by ground fire several times, but kept flying. Ronnie survived the war and retired as a Squadron Leader with a DFC. He settled in England and married into my family.
Years on, the Falklands war broke his heart - especially because the legend of 164 Squadron was used to spur on the brave Argentine A4 Skyhawk pilots in 1982 - and they were incredibly brave. They sank six British ships (yes, six) and almost turned the war.
Ronnie died three years ago. We have his medals, a few photos, and an incredible story. I hope you didn't mind me sharing it with you.
