Cool, but in a serial machine-gunner kind of way. Caring for pretty flowers, ripe vegetables, and chrysalises of death-head hawk moths...

Nice petunias Jacob. I know they're purple, but unfornately I'm afraid the true tint is probably lost on me (being colorblind). It's probably for that reason I enjoy more primary colored flora.

I especially enjoy blue flowers. Blue is one I the least common colors in nature. I particularly like bluebonnets (lupinus texenis). As a random comment, they're not very big, but they're still the state flower of Texas.

The yard and beds have been neglected this year and I need to start planning for next year.
Fuck this place. Second rate hack playing in a yard that's too big for him.

PH, love lupins too, haven't had more than two this year but next year I will have some Lupin 'Tutti Fruitti' as they aren't just blue you may not be interested but if you haven't tried Meconopsis betonicifolia (Himilayan Blue Poppy) then you must, I find them hard to grow but well worth it if they flower.

We have a well known seed and flower producer, supplier, breeder and cultivator about 20 miles from my house and they have a US site, if you fancy some different things try them www.tmseeds.com/ .

Dear Gardener's World,
As you can see from this picture, my back yard is looking a bit shabby. The agent who sold this property described it as 'an ideal challenge for the experienced gardening enthusiast'. Well, he is now on the run, and I am stuck with this garden. The soil is very poor, it is parched in the summer and frozen solid in winter. It also gets the occasional surprize mowing down, so to speak.
I was wondering if you or any of your kind readers could give me a few suggestions, noting that the nearest garden centre is 1,200 km from here.
Please don't worry if nothing can be done for my garden. I will continue to appreciate it in the evenings through night vision goggles, which make it look nice and green all year round.

PS, this is not really my back yard. I grabbed it from the www for effect only. I live underground really.

Thank you for your enquiry Mr Biggs

Your soil type looks a little dry and rocky and your borders seem to be in partial shade.

Perhaps you could try echevaria or some of the sempervivums which don't require too much water. You could possibly try mesembryanthemum on your upper slopes and leave them to cascade to the lower planting areas !

Best regards

YB
