I think I spent a good week with the following misplaced strategy,

avoid all reds

run around to the corners of the map

try to come from behind the enemy base and surprise them

most of the time, the only person who got surprised was me when either I got shot down by enemy laughin their head off a the slow fokker heading their way or by the you lose, or you win screen before I even get to my destination

this is how i fly !!! :)

lol,

I sure do now, but I still play safe

I guess what made it all the worse was that I was an aspirant who self ranked himself a captain

more than one person pointed that out to me

this is how i fly !!! :)

Dont be cautious. Be cocky. If you happen to be a fighter pilot in REAL life, be cautious. In dogfight, you just respawn if you die. Its just an annoyance to be shot down, so you learn to avoid it. Thats how i learned. Attack the top aces you can find, and dont back down. ;)

Thank goodness! I just now found this thread during a search for "landings" after posting about my current state of personal misery &the anguish over the very same things I see you guys talking about in this thread. If I weren't so stubborn, I would have just given up a few times. I was so discouraged! I have been so relieved at the number of great guys here who encourage new folks like me instead of giving them a hard time. Thank all of you!

This has been my strategy for over a year. It's the only way I can get any kills/hits at all. Of course my kill/deaths ratio is still about 1-5 (about the poorest I've seen).

I don't know about that. Not sure exactly what my ratio is but, I am sure it stinks. Even though frustration is sometimes almost unbearable, at same time I am having so much fun. Almost like a paradox......or something like that.

I remember it, like it was tomorrow. I knew it was not going to be a good day, when on the way to the flight line I was chased by a cow. My take off was too slow and I almost hit the cow. After 20 minutes in the air, I came across 22 of the enemy. It was difficult, but I had survived! Unfortunately, I was too fast on landing. I could not stop. And yes, I hit the cow! Now, don't cry about YOUR bad day!

I always liked reading this thread.

my only problem was crashing when i was an aspirant. for some reason, no matter how far i tilted my kindle back, the plane would not lift into the air(and then i finally found the settings button  ) after that i wasnt to bad. it ttok me a bit to get a hangof the landing on carriers thing, and after that i just loved the game. my record in an average game back then was around 2-40, and the game REALLY pissed me off some times, but i never walked away. and now im one of the best people i know  wait, are we talking about dogfight here? nvm then :woohoo:  :P

Black Flag wrote: I remember how hard it was to fly. Coming off the runway and then just crashing; spawning and then coming off the runway and then just crashing; and then if I managed to actually stay up I got shot down almost instantly. That was pretty much how my first 10 (maybe more) games went. And the very first fighter I shot down was by accident. I also shot at blue my very first game and got the statement that I give to first timers, “shot red”. Oh man, I had no clue. I was like the most greenhorn of all greenhorns.

I also thought that I could outmaneuver the Albatross or the S.E.a5’s. by flying in circles; needless to say, it did not take me very long to figure out that it was a BAD IDEA. Then I got to the point where it seemed like I would just wing everyone but never shoot anyone down and I would get shot down relentlessly. I ended some games with a 2 – 20 record. I nearly gave up playing this game at that point.

And I could just forget a carrier landings. That was just bad news for me for a long time. I still nose flip an odd time here and there. Nothing like a good nose flip to keep you humble. I also remember flying the wrong way a couple of times and nearly bombing my own base. I never did though. I was fortunate in that the times that I did fly the wrong way, I noticed blue planes on the runway taking off. I’d think to myself, “Hmmm that’s odd”; then I looked on the map and noticed that I was about to bomb a blue base and aborted. Came close a couple of times though.

And then there was always the AC’s, BG’s and G’s that came flying in shooting all over creation like they’ve got a turret on both sides of the plane spraying death in all directions. I always stuck with those games though.

Anyways, just reminiscing. Anyone remember they’re Aspirant days? Any Aspirants want to share their grief?

I remember when I was an aspirant. Misshell, SweetJosephine, Austin Powers, Cloud buster, and Sig-they murdered me. Then Kero Zen came along andscared the crap out of me! And I think in one of my first games, I killed 8 people-I didn't know how though, lol. Then I held off Philip's army for a while , until I accidentally pressed quit. Then there was this one time when I stumbled upon a "family feud." It sounded like Misshell was pretending to be someone's wife. Every guy playing wanted to be shot down by her, but I just hid in the corner and watched.

I remember a game in which I choose to tank after being shot down very close to a carrier. After putting 10 or 12 rounds into it, I asked the group at large how many times did i have to shoot it before it blew up. I was gleefully informed by wig that it was a capture the carrier game, not destroy it. Moment later I was even more gleefully informed by seven that I was shooting my own carrier anyway!!

If you build it, I will come.......and bomb it !!!
