Your friend will receive an e-mail with the code for you to redeem the 5000 points and if he tells you he never got the e-mail, he is lying.

did your friend join the game using facebook?
it should be automatic. But that person has to link it with the facebook account. Otherwise it's impossible for the system to know you invied that person (it checks with facebook to compare the invitations).
