For an interesting item on Antiques Roadshow on PBS, see the description of the Indian painting and the story about the last pilot to be accepted into Lafayette Escadrille.

The painting is done on a part of the cloth of a Spad VII, not on canvas.
Hopefully this is of interest.

I found a cool BBC article about many military aviation firsts: the first plane shot down from another plane, the first aerial attack on a Naval vessel, the first aircraft carriers... The article is from 2014 but it is worth a read. All of these firsts took place a little over 100 years ago.
