His mind was not in the right place, and neither were his intentions. My father was able to keep him away with his Glock 19, until the authorities came (a half hour later). No trigger was ever squeezed, but I don't want to know what would have happened if my dad hadn't had that gun to defend us with.
I know anecdotes have no place in a logical argument, but my opinion remains the same. I hope I never have to use my 92FS, but if I do, it's because there's a damn good reason.
My Aunt has a similar story. She was sunbathing on an empty beach in Presque Isle, and a creep came out of the woods next to the parking lot, naked. He gave her an evil grin and said, "hey baby, ever see one of these?". She smiled back and said, "yes, but not that small", then reached into her purse and pulled out her snub nose .38 and replied "how about you; you ever see one of these?" and pointed it at his nose. He took off fast and left his clothes in the woods.
I'm glad she had that pistol, she's really cool and if he had raped and killed her there on that beach I would miss her. Most of the time a gun is used in self defense, it is not fired. The anti crowd likes to use statistics showing how many people are killed in self defense versus homicides or suicides, but the reality is the presence of a gun and it's display often changes the dynamic. Most times a would-be criminal is confronted with a firearm, they change their mind, their direction of travel, their general outlook on crime as a vocation, and possibly thier political affiliation. Only psychopaths walk around hoping for a self defense situation where they can shoot someone, the average citizen will simply show that they are armed and that is the end of it. A person holding a gun, and the click of a chamber rotating or the racking the slide of a shotgun is usually interpreted correctly by the criminal as nature's way of saying "don't mess with me", like a rattlesnake's buzz, a dog with bared teeth or a skunk with it's tail up. Anyone not so dissuaded meant you harm in the first place.
