Some french city names on "Somme front" (1916):

Poziéres, Mountauban, Ginchy, Le Sars, Sailly-Sailisell, La Boiselle...

The french City where take place the allied armies strategic discussions about to attack the german "Sommme front" was Chantilly.

This is a great idea, but these battles at Festubert, and the taken of the Vimy ridge were not in the Somme department but in the Pas-de-Calais (Festubert was 15 kms from my grand-mother village, and Vimy around 30 kms and now canadian territory for their sacrifice of the soldiers) Somme is not a village but a department and also a river, great battles there. The father of a friend pick up around 1000 kilogrammes of "grenades a fusil" there, that are destroyed one time each years by specialists thqt turns in the farms. Festubert is a village. Vimy either. And just for my regreted grandmother just for me it is Chocques (her village !!) :P !!

The village of the film "joyeux noel" is probably Frelinghien, it is in the french North Department, near the town of Lille. 50 kms north of the Vimy Ridge.

Joyeux Noël is the Christmas 1914 engagement so Lille will be my suggestion.

Lille is 25 kms south east of Messines (Belgium Flanders), 50 kms north of Vimy and around the same distance from Festubert to the east. So it is well in the triangular area of the 3 : Messines-Festubert-Vimy ridge.

i think a good suggestion and peace message for a war game from Bellsaj.

An actual Pas-de-Calais commune very near Vimy, with its original WWI village rebuilt and a war memorial.

The word, Avion, French for "airplane", is perfect.

One thing I think is great in dogfight is the group photos that get taken.
How about make it a place to take group photos. It is already in between the opposite teams bases!

I've been following this thread and there's been nothing resembling a consensus on a name, I haven't been aware of any deletions, nobody has "hijacked" anything and "Mantzville is a tribute to Paul Mantz, not to Manfred as mentioned above.

Thank you, but no thank you. As flattering as that is, if you know your DF history, I already have a tree near the bridge. I just wish the WORDAGS would stop using it for a pit-stop.

I don't deserve such a wonderful honor. Besides, I like my tree.

I think Lille would be a perfect name. The location is perfect and if you GOOGLE it you'll see that it is a beautiful city.

Lille is a solid choice, I went with Avion because its size is more consistent with the size of the DF village and the name association is tough to beat. Joaquin could actually loosely approximate the reconstructed WWI village in Avion without much trouble. Lille is a much larger city. If Joaquin sees some major urban sprawl in its future, Lille is worth considering.
