Stop running

Seriously though this is a very interesting thread. Me I smoke but trying to stop, started using one of those electronic things, word of warning here, don't try to light it, they melt. I don't eat properly during the week, I snack on nuts and bananas, I cycle everywhere at weekends I try to get in a 20 mile one off road. Now my problem is I want to put some weight on, but I've never ever, even I used to and still do occasionally pig out, never got past nine and half stone, I'm 5.8 height. So what should I be doing. Aside from trying to eat properly and what should I eat.
Never asked anyone about this before, kinda weird.

OK slender what's your take on teas that are labeled like liver cleansing, kidney cleansing, and the like to take out toxins in the body?.. I now suffer, because of inactivity from my job..armed security officer pulmonary oedema( adema).. left untreated..its fatal..I have restarted walking a nature trail that's 1.5 miles in diameter twice a day for as much as my heart will stand and taking wheat grass with cranberry juice or water to help curb appetite. Also I have stoped sodas altogether and drink water with squeeze lemon..not lemon flavored water..my salt intake has been drastically reduced..any tips on a more holistic cure..trying to lose weight around the middle more than anything...btw i dont drink smoke or do drugs of any type..rarely aspirin and i rarely get sick..been years since a cold, flu or headache..thanks

Michael whenever I want to lose some weight I do Atkins induction phase, meaning no more than 20 grams of carbs per day. You could exceed that just by looking at a cookie, so don't bother. Stick to meat, fish, green veggies, heavy cream, butter, bacon, eggs, all the good stuff. A bit of fruit here and there. Eliminate bread, anything with flour, sugar, rice, potatoes & other starchy veggies. Worst part is carb withdrawal (and, for me, giving up beer) but that usually clears up after the first week or so. Once you get adapted to it it's smooth sailing. Just eat real food during it. No Atkins bars or any similar fake crap.

Sumo wrestlers eat light all day and at around midnight before bed eat their largest meal. I don't suggest this for anyone not wanting to put on weight. It's the worst time to eat. Breakfast is an important meal.

Gah -- no offense, Flyingmuck. But "Stop running" is the worst advice you could give unless you're unable to complete a lap due to an injury. In that case, take 3 days to a week off.

We all start somewhere when it comes to endurance! All you need to do is build it, my friend. Run every day. Make yourself run just a little bit more each and every day. Same thing applies to lifting weights. Gotta add on a little more and a little more. Hit a plateau and you find yourself stuck at the same distance/weight? Work with that for a little bit and wait for your body to accommodate.

As the great Friedrich Nietzsche once said,

"He who cannot obey himself will be commanded.".

Command yourself and accomplish your goals. This is by far the most satisfying thing about fitness.

As someone who specializes in cardiopulmonary and respiratory care/therapy -- gotta quit smoking, brother. There are only 3 things that are meant to be inside your lungs:

-Air
-Sputum
-Surfactant

Burning plant matter or even water vapor containing various chemicals aren't exactly healthy and will heavily impact your oxygen saturation levels -- decreasing your exercise performance ability. Many smokers saturation are around 80 to 85%. In the hospital -- we don't let patients leave until their sat is at least >90%.

You wish to put weight on as well. Nicotine heavily suppresses appetite. You'll want to try cutting it out completely.

You only gave me your height and said you wished to gain weight. I highly recommend you start a "bulking diet". Read my first post in this thread to figure out how to calculate what you'll need, it's super easy to do. You'll find yourself eating 5-6 protein packed meals a day. You'll want to consume at least 1 gram of protein per pound you currently weigh. BUT! Don't bulk without lifting properly, otherwise you'll only gain fat. Because you want to make some pretty big mass gains, I highly recommend you do the "Starting Strength" program. One of my gym buddies is currently doing it and he started out looking like he came out of Auschwitz. He was a twig! After doing a SS regiment, he filled out really well and he tripled all of his bench, OHP, squat and deadlift stats.

For more information on Starting Strength -- hit up the Wiki:

startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/Starting_Strength_Wiki

The program is supposed to cost money -- but you can EASILY find all the information you need right there, for free.

And don't worry, this isn't weird at all. Your post is exactly the type I've been wanting to receive; so I can help. :)

Ah, yes. Pulmonary edema is something I specialize with. I just saw a bronchoscopy the other day where we went in and took some samples from it. Where is it at in your lung? Can you not have it removed?

Anyways, green teas and whatnot are great. Full of antioxidants. However -- a lot of the claims made are things that water will do for you. And it'll do it better. I'd avoid a lot of the fruit juices. Though they market them to seem healthy -- they're jammed with unbelievable amounts of sugar which is terrible on your body and circulatory health. There's no major need to invest in a lot of expensive juices and whatnot. Just drink water! When you first wake up, try drinking a good liter to jump start your drive. As your urinate throughout the day, replenish what you lost. Do this and you'll easily get a gallon down in a day. I drink about a gallon and a half of water just by doing this.

You may also want to invest in a red yeast rice and fish oil supplement. They'll help you immensely with your over all health, cholesterol levels and cardiopulmonary health, joint health, etc.

Because you have a pulmonary edema, have you ever done any Incentive Spirometry before? It worries me that this hasn't been treated yet. What's your planned course of treatment?

Atkins is based a lot of the body concept of "ketosis". When you completely reduce your body's carb intake, your body goes into "starvation mode" and begins consuming fat. I don't recommend Atkins and in only REALLY healthy individuals will I recommend a form of keto (because most people quickly re-gain their weight after quiting these programs).

I don't wish to burst your bubble, bopes -- but Atkins would be the worst thing for him to do right now.

Exactly, this is TERRIBLE for you. Sumo wrestlers wish to put on fat, NOT MUSCLE. Binging at night is a quick way to get unbelievably obesse very very quickly. Terrible on your body. Dinner should be the smallest meal of the day.

No no no, don't give anything up. Don't do Atkins. Simply drink plenty of water, eat plenty of leafy greens and vegitables, eat fish (for Omega 3's) and if you can -- try to do a little bit of cardio. Even if it's just walking. I realize you'll have shortness of breath because of your pulmonary edema, but any sort of physical activity will help you greatly.

And please reply to my previous post. Will you not be able to have it removed due to the edema's position in your lung?

Ah, I said I wasn't going to run until I decided it was time to start cutting. Cardio kills muscle gains. Because I'm not going to be hitting up too many beaches this summer and will be doing summer clinic shifts 3 times a week along with classes -- I'm going to carry on with my bulk.

But my gains have been going great as usual!

When one gains muscle, one gains fat. I've been clean bulking though -- hitting my protein needs & macros but eating no more. That way the majority of my gains are only lean muscle mass gains. Regardless, my body still looks good. Unfortunately, I'm only running at a 4-pack right now; all because my body fat percentage went from 10% to 13%. Which is actually really good. Most guys on bulk wrack their BF% up another 10 from where they started. Yikes!

I'm afraid I do not (I've edited my post, by the way) -- however I tend to take part in many travels during my breaks. Because I'll be busy with clinicals and more classes, I simply wont have the time to take on anything else.

I'll be done with the program in a year though. So next spring, I'll begin my cut and re-unlock my core. :)

Ahahah, very true. I'm naturally very lean and I burn fat way quicker than I gain it. So it'll take only 2-3 months of cutting to get it back. All good. :)

Surprisingly -- you're finally one of the first people to ask me up front. Everyone makes a lot of assumptions about my schooling, hahahah! I'm majoring in Respiratory Therapy. That's why I specialize in cardiopulmonary & respiratory health so much. I plan on graduating, getting my CRT, getting my RRT then going into the Respiratory-Paramed program (3 months). After that, it's just a matter of getting my other requirements. I'm really wanting to do transport work -- where we fly patients out via jets, helicopters, etc. You basically have your down time in the hangar, do about 16 transports a day (mostly local but they've even done international in Egypt, Russia, etc). If there's a medical emergency (i.e Hurricane Katrina); you'll get shipped out on a C-130 and work with the military on evacuating people. I've always had a gift of working unbelievably well under pressure (clinic days in the ER, the units & critical care are my favorite) and around some pretty brutal wounds. Because of theses gifts, I'd like to utilize them in helping save lives. No point in having these traits and only doing floor therapy all day. :P

So yeah! Respiratory Therapy. I love it.

How's that progress, Black Flag?

Ever start running, Pownage?

Any new members of the forum into fitness, lifting, etc? :)

So far with me, I've put on just below 30 lbs since I started lifting. I started 6'4 162 lbs (skeleton mode activate). Right now I'm at 6'5 (dat improved posture from back workouts ;) ) and 190 lbs. My bodyfat percentage has gone from 11% to 13% because like I said -- when you gain muscle, you'll gain fat due to eating on a calorie surplus diet.

I'm starting to plateau from here with my noobie gains. Now it'll take a long time to put on lean muscle mass, but I love lifting and there's no rush. :cheer:

Potential goal in 2 years is to reach about 210 with a bf% of 8-10%.

We're all gonna make it. :)

Also, is anyone here into cycling? I'm thinking about picking it up. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. From the type of bike to buy to building endurance. Thanks!

HI GUYS, JUST TO LET YOU KNOW I JUST TURNED 62 IN APRIL. I'VE BEEN LIFTING FOR ABOUT 20 YEARS NOW. I ALSO RUN AND/OR WALK BETWEEN 3 TO 6 MILES A DAY.

IT IS GETTING SO MUCH HARDER LATELY TO DO THESE THINGS WITH WORK, PLAYING DOGFIGHT LOL AND KEEPING THE WIFE HAPPY. I CAN STILL CURL 125 LBS. ONE THING I LIKE TO DO IS PUSH-UPS. BETWEEN GAMES AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY I TRY TO DO AT LEAST 200 TO 300 PUSH-UPS.

THIS IS ME ON 62 nd BIRTHDAY. TAKE CARE ALL.

Yeah, I'm in Uni but I hardly have any time for sports. I just lift in my free time. :)

Damn, Davy! Nice guns my friend, hahahah! A lot of guys your age would have lost pretty much all mass or they would have turned blubbery. Good to see you taking care of yourself, really makes me happy. :)

LOL. I completely misread part of your post and thought it said, "I can still curl 125 lbs with one hand."

I was thinking, "What?! I can only curl 50 lbs tops with one arm." hahahah!

Keep it up, Hercules. :)
