I'm 660 km away from Fort Mac. It's been on the news here for the past 2 days. There is a chance that I will be going up there to help repair and restore damaged gas facilities once the fire is out and it's safe to be up there.
For those of you that don't know, Fort McMurray is where the oilsands are. It has been a major part of the economy in Canada. The city has struggled the last couple of years with the decline in value of oil. So times were already kinda tough to begin with...now this.
From an Albertan's point of view, it is a very important key in our entire country's prosperity. The rest of the country, and much of the world thinks that the process of taking oil out of the sand is more damaging to the environment than it's worth. Obviously, if we were so bad to the environment, there wouldn't be any trees to burn. A lot of ignorance on the topic...But I digress.
We get lots of forest fires every year here...it's really dry here this spring so it seems to be starting early. I just hope the residents make it out safely. We will help rebuild.
