On December 4, 1958 Robert Timm and John Cook took off from McCarran Airfield in Las Vegas, NV in a newly-built Cessna 172, registration number N9172B. Sixty-four days, 22 hours, 19 minutes and 5 seconds later, they landed back at McCarran Airfield on February 4, 1959. The flight was part of a fund-raising effort for the Damon Runyon Cancer Fund. The drivers steered while a second person matched speeds with the aircraft with his foot on the vehicle's accelerator pedal.

Engine oil was added by means of a tube from the cabin that was fitted to pass through the firewall. Only the pilot's seat was installed. The remaining space was used for a pad on which the relief pilot slept. The right cabin door was replaced with an easy-opening, accordion-type door to allow supplies and fuel to be hoisted aboard. Early in the flight, the engine-driven electric generator failed. A Champion wind-driven generator (turned by a small propeller) was hoisted aboard, taped to the wing support strut, and plugged into the cigarette lighter socket; it served as the aircraft's source of electricity for the rest of the flight. The pilots decided to end the marathon flight because with 1,558 hours of continuously running the engine during the record-setting flight, plus several hundred hours already on the engine beforehand (considerably in excess of its normal overhaul interval), the engine's power output had deteriorated to the point that they were barely able to climb away after refueling. The aircraft is on display in the passenger terminal at McCarran International Airport. Photos and details of the record flight can be seen in a small museum on the upper level of the baggage claim area.[9] After the flight, Cook said: “Next time I feel in the mood to fly endurance, I'm going to lock myself in our garbage can with the vacuum cleaner running. That is, until my psychiatrist opens up for business in the morning.”

I tried to find a picture that I saw a long time ago of a guy refueling by climbing out of the aircraft and pouring in fuel from a can.

Tu shay. Well played lol. I didn't know they could refuel while in the air. Someone told me that if not grounded it will cause static and ignite the gas. What's what. I heard

I worked at the airport as line crew/mechanic for around four years, and the only time I ever used the grounding cable on the truck was when people whined about it. I've even seen people smoking while they pour gas and that didn't ignite it. One time we tossed a lit cigarette into a coffee can with gas in it. No fire, it just put out the cig. Lol

The fuel truck did catch fire once, but that was caused by a leaky carburetor and hot exhaust. Still it was exciting!

Wow lol sounds cool. I hopefully am goin to work at Honda jets when I graduate college. I want to b a mechanic and work on them.

To all the leaders before Sky, you all have built a great squadron, always fine tuning the squad to make it a great squad. Making a democracy. Always helping, and supporting every one. You all have earnd every ones respect as leaders and pilots. You guys are a credit to this squad. With that said I salute every one of you FFF.

Now for our new Leader SkyDavis, with out a shadow of a doubt you will make a great leader. You do have some huge shoes to fill, but we all believe in you, and believe you can some how make our squad a little better. Not much to improve on though! Congratulations to you Sky.
